New W7 Computer - Restore all from old mirror backup

Apr 5, 2017 7:01PM PDT

My 2010 Dell Inspiron is at end of life. I want to buy a refurbished Dell OptiPlex with W7. I want to keep W7 on desktop, have W10 on laptop. The question is, when I get the new one with W7, can I do a restore from the mirror backup I did from the old one. I want everything and all the settings from the old one, and all the software that I don't have the CD's for including my MS Office 2013. etc. I basically want the new one to be like my old one except with the refurbished parts. The old one is really slow. Thanks. Jay R

Well, you can't do that but,

What you can do is save all of your files and folders to an external source and than when you get the new computer , you can transfer those to the new OS

That are all your own files, but only a few programs (most must be reinstalled) and only some settings (the ones that are not in the registry and that you know where to find, such as your Firefox profile, your Word templates and your Excel personal macro file).

Before you restore that image from the old machine to the new machine make an image of the new machine.

Just so you will have a method of getting back if things don't work.

Even if it does work I'm thinking msft will not be happy when your old OS shows up on a different machine.

just swap harddrives. save you from losing the os install that came with the new computer. you can change out the key later. one thing, normally different computers mean different motherboards and different drivers. most likely it will not work.

I like that idea

Unless of course the older computer is IDE and there's only SATA available on the newer one.
