New TV: Sony 1080p SXRD-Samsung 1080p DLP-Samsung LED DLP

May 11, 2006 12:05AM PDT

I want to get a new TV for my living room or family room. I already have a 50" Samsung DLP, which I love and would buy 10 more in a heartbeat. I've had great success with my Samsung DLP, so I don't need to be dissuaded or sold on the product.

I want another big screen, so that's why I'm here looking for thoughts/advice. I've talked with some people at various Audio/Video stores who all say the Sony SXRD 1080p is the best right now. Looking at the picture, I will say it is impressive. However, the Samsung 1080p DLP is cheaper (although I have not seen the 1080p in person). Another however - Samsung just started selling their new LED based DLP TVs. Has anyone seen the new LED DLPs? If so, what do you think? Is the LED technology too new to jump into right now? Has anyone compared the Sony SXRD 1080p to the Samsung 1080p DLP?

Thanks in advance.

Also the new J.V.C ila set blows away all the other brands period fact I wanted a Sony in the first place I went to every vidio store in the bay area and could not find any Sony that had a razor sharp picture like my Toshiba or the J.V.C as far as the Samsung goes I also thought it had a better picture than any sony but the new Sony Vidio front projectors look jawdropping or should I say better than sex Please post more We need more folks that are not stuck on Sony no baloney

JUST BUY THE SONY..............................

ONCE it's in your home you don't have to worry about salespersons TWEEKING it in their favor, just to get a higher commission on the price, or units sold.

Very interesting. No ears at all. Accepts 1080p. Other improvements. Doesn't look like any compromises will be necessary with that one. Wonder what will happen with the price? August seems like a long time but it might be worth the wait.

Yippee, the ears are gone!!!
Jun 6, 2006 6:39AM PDT

This is great news!!! We've been searching all over town to find a home entertainment & credenza large enough to fit the 57 1/2 inch wide Sony SXRD 50". The standard credenzas are only 56" inches in width making this a very difficult TV to fit with most furniture.

My husband and I just came from Best Buy today and saw two new 50" SXRDs in the boxes, marked down to $2500 dollars. The reason written on the box.."returned, cusomer said it was too big"!!!

We have been comparing the Samsung 50" DLP 1080 to the Sony SXRD and it's a toss up. The Sony does have a better picture but not by much. We would have already purchased the Sony if it wasn't for the size. Now that I know a new sleek 46 1/2 wide version is coming out in the next month or so, I think we'll wait.

Ears remain on the XBR2
Jun 7, 2006 1:07AM PDT

On the two high end models (the 70" and the high-end 60"), know as the XBR2 series, the ears remain.

I wonder: Which is better? The current XBR1 sets, or the new A2000 (entry-level SXRD) sets? My local Circuit City is selling the current 50" model at $2500 for new set. The list price for the new A2000 will be $3500 according to Sony.

For those that can live with the ears, it might be wise to get the XBR1, if you don't need the 1080p input.

Interesting..........

I'd still go with the XBR series. Anything else is not pimpy enough.

Acutally, the sets they sell are the E2000, not A2000.
Aug 5, 2006 3:45AM PDT

the E2000 are not 1080p's nor are they sxrd. The E2000 is just a stepup from last year's 50a10 model. Difference is the E2000 has 2 hdmi's instead of one.

Seems to me...
Jun 7, 2006 12:23AM PDT

seems more people have said they like the samsung. 2 things make me wonder. One those are set up for HDTV you still watch most of your tv in 480 and Consumer reports rate the samsung bad with regular tv. Also in CR rates on rear projective samsung doenst even have a tv in the top 10 nor does cnet. Which makes me really want to shy away from samsung. Just a thought.

I watch HD 90% of the time...
Jun 7, 2006 6:02AM PDT

I get about 20 HD channels through my local Time Warner and I honestly spend most of TV watching on those channels. There might be certain programs I DVR on the non-HD channels, but luckily the bulk of networks I usually watch have gone HD. Regular TV looks bad (compared to good old direct view CRT TV) on most microdisplays (that I've seen). I was in Circuit City watching regular TV on the Sony 50" SXRD XBR and it looked average - nothing special. But I expect that.

I know I buy my TV's for the HD channels and the DVD's. Most of the sports programming and top shows are broadcast in 720p/1080i now. If I want excellent non-HD viewing, I'll turn on my direct view CRT TV.

defend sony a little
Jun 12, 2006 10:45AM PDT

dont get me wrong, i love the samsung and i think it is the better tv. i like dlp better bc it does real dark blacks and has five colors on the samsungs which beats lcds 3 colors. i like that it accepts 1080p and i think it has the best picutre. analog and digital are almost identical on the two sets (samsung hls5687w and sony 60" sxrd) and high def only looks a little bit better on the samsung which will only b noticed by a trained eye or a very anal person. the big difference is that no one has seen 1080p on them yet(and u never will w/ the sxrd sony). both sony and samsungs demos are upconverted 1080i which is wat the sxrd does, but wen u see blu ray, true 1080p, the samsung will really shine. however the sxrd is a great tv. it has an awsome picture w/ a 1080p native resolution, and it sounds better than the samsung (sorry guys but u kno its true). i do think the color is alot better on samsung mostly due to the 5 color dlp color wheel but alot of taht is that the sxrds hav been on display for a year and they are starting to dim. i still think the sammys will b better a year from now that the sxrds are now but just kkep that in mind. u can knock the sxrds all u want but they really are great tvs. the samsungs i think are better and i got one but the sxrds really are great.

2005 Sonys vs 2006 Sammys, apples to oranges
Jun 8, 2006 1:59AM PDT

I think everyone is missing the boat here. You are trying to compare 2005 Sonys vs 2006 Sammys. The 2006 Sonys won't be out till the fall. All 2006 versions, Sonys XBR2, A2000 and Sammys HLSXX87 series TVs, are able to take 1080p res through their HDMI ports. The 2005 Sony XBR1 is a 1080p TV but can not input 1080p signals (the HLR sammys are in the same boat). It upconverts everything. So if you buy the XBR1, you won't have the abiliy to take PS3 1080p signals. It all depends on what your price and time levels are. If you want a TV now or before football season, I suggest looking at the new Sammys. If you can wait longer and can afford the higher price then wait till the fall for the XBR2s. It is too early to tell what TV looks better because the XBR2s are not out yet but in my opinion they should be a hair better (if you discount they whole green blob thing that is happening to XBRs). Is it worth the price ~500 bucks?? My eyes can't tell a difference but my wallet can.

Samsung warranty and service
Jun 8, 2006 6:26AM PDT

The boogie man in my wallet's closet is warranty and service.

I've heard horror stories about Samsung service and extended warranties that were no good because Samsung could not provide replacement parts, and more recent rumpurs about trouble with the spinning color wheel on the HLS series. At the same time I am not happy with Sony quality as I have had service issues with even a WEGA Trinitron under warranty.

The real issue may be where to buy an air-tight extended warranty for either TV (Crutchfield does not sell such in California). I'd buy a Sammy tomorrow but for not having seen the Sony and worry about warranty work, especially after buying a warranty from the Good Guys!

Green Blob?
Jun 8, 2006 7:15AM PDT

Okay, what is the "green blob" thing? I didn't see a great deal of difference between the Sony SXRD 50" and the Samsumg DLP 1080 50" but my husband did. We would have bought the Sony except for the 57 1/4 inch width that won't fit in our entertainment center. The new model would solve that but it sounds like there could be other issues or differences with the new Sony's that won't be worth the wait or cost difference.

Green Blob help
Jun 8, 2006 9:13PM PDT

Google this problem and you will find plenty on it. In short, some XRB1 owners report seeing a 'green blob' on their screens over time. I guess it is a problem with the technology (silicon crystal). I have read reports that it never happens and some people report it happening to them within 6 months. Seems kinda hit or miss.

GREEN BLOB/HAZE ISSUE ON SONY SXRD SERIES (A2000 AND XBR1/2
Sep 21, 2006 11:12AM PDT

Does anyone know how sony responds to this green blob issue? Can it be rectified or is it something that you just have to live with? Does Sony offer a replacement or product exchange if it happens during warranty period & cannot be fixed?

Thanks. I'm in the process of researching my first hdtv purchase & have learned just enough to be dangerous to myself! (no joke!!)

Green Blob SXRD
Sep 21, 2006 8:39PM PDT

Well I will let everyone know very soon. We have color distortion on the bottom corners of the TV (like a magnet on a CRT) plus distortion of black scenes,(unable to remain black) and a halo effect on dark scenes during action sequences.

Is this the green blob? I don't know. But this TV is unwatchable.

Lets see how Sony responds.

First time ever a TV broke in 7 months after purchase.
Never had a TV break period!

XBR1 crashed after 7 months
Nov 13, 2006 1:44AM PST

I had a similar problem withmy 60" XBR1. The TV would show the channel for 3 seconds then black for 10. Had the extended warranty on the set and BB repair guy said the optical block was bad. Originally told that the part would be in in 3-5 business days. Two weeks later called BB and was told that the part was backordered for 3 months. Finally got return authorization for the TV and am waiting for my Samsung HLS7178 to be delivered. Sony's parts are in short supply so pray the TV doesnt break.

I own the new Samsung 1080p LED DLP - Beats Sony SXRD
Jun 9, 2006 7:31AM PDT

I spent a great deal of time researching these two televisions. I was almost sold on teh Sony until I put them to the test. At my request teh folks at Circuit City put the two sets side-by-side. I asked that they both receive the same HD feed; both be connected to XBOX 360s, and both connected to the same DVD player.

First, non-performance issues. The Samsung price is better. The Samsung size is bigger. The Samsung style is more sleek.

Second, performance. The Samsung screen was much brighter and more crisp than the Sony. The eyes don't lie ladies and gentlemen, the Samsung definitely outperformed teh Sony on all fronts. The xbox 360 came across more clean than on teh Sony. The Sony exhibited a slightly green tinge. Dvds were also cleaner. Blacks were deep and complete on the Samsung. Blacks were grainy on the Sony.

Third, the Samsung accepts 1080p external sources. The Sony upconverts 1080i to a false 1080p.

The Samsung performed better, hands-down.

There is always a war going on between l,c,d, and d.l.p sets on which technology is best and you hit it on the nail, I wanted to buy a Sony because of all the rave reports I read. but when you compare The Sony side by side to a good d.l.p. set, the Sony l.c.d. has jagged edge apearence to it where as the d.l.p. sets are razer sharp please reply back stewart
