New TV: Sony 1080p SXRD-Samsung 1080p DLP-Samsung LED DLP

May 11, 2006 12:05AM PDT

I want to get a new TV for my living room or family room. I already have a 50" Samsung DLP, which I love and would buy 10 more in a heartbeat. I've had great success with my Samsung DLP, so I don't need to be dissuaded or sold on the product.

I want another big screen, so that's why I'm here looking for thoughts/advice. I've talked with some people at various Audio/Video stores who all say the Sony SXRD 1080p is the best right now. Looking at the picture, I will say it is impressive. However, the Samsung 1080p DLP is cheaper (although I have not seen the 1080p in person). Another however - Samsung just started selling their new LED based DLP TVs. Has anyone seen the new LED DLPs? If so, what do you think? Is the LED technology too new to jump into right now? Has anyone compared the Sony SXRD 1080p to the Samsung 1080p DLP?

Thanks in advance.

But the LED HDTV is VERY NEW, LED would be a big improvment, less heat, less power, last the life of the TV, The one thing I don't like about DLPs is the color wheel, this will have to be replaced every few years.
The advantage of the Sony/JVC LCoS sets is that they have 3 chips and NO COLOR wheel. Now when they come out with a LCoS set that uses LEDs instead of a lamp, that will be good. I'm interestend in seeing the Sansung LED models also. John

The samsung 79W LED based DLP has no color wheel.
But the new LEDs will give you up to 4000:1 contrast as opposed to the regular DLP 10000:1 or the SXRDs...Im looking foreward to the LED myself, 20000 hour LED life is a good lifespan, and no wheel.

Yes, this is a good thing!!!!!! They must be using RGB LEDs. I was on the AVS forum a couple of days ago and there are a lot of people having color wheel problems. John

My advice would be........

to get the SXRD. The picture is much better in comparison to any samsung you can put next to it. Also, the contrast ratio on the SXRD is higher than the Samsung LED set you're talking about. I'm not a big fan of color wheels simply because the more moving parts you got, the more maintenance you're asking for in the long run.

I can guarantee you, if you get the SXRD, you'll be wanting to replace your Samsung for another SXRD. That's how kick a$$ the picture quality of the XBR1 is.

I was at circuit city tonite and I started talking to this woman and when I mentioned that I had the SXRD 60" at home, she was following me all over the store and we wound up having dinner together and are going to go buy more equipment for her tomorrow to add to her Bravia 40" lcd she bought last week.

The moral of the story?
Get the SXRD, it gets you chicks.

Leaning toward the SXRD
May 12, 2006 12:09AM PDT

Thanks for the advice. After going to a couple more TV stores during lunch yesterday, I'm leaning toward the SXRD. They had a 61" Samsung 1080p next to the 50" Sony SXRD and the Sony was sharper.

I'm already married, so I don't need to get any more chicks, but that's good advice should she ever leave me. Happy

Sony vs Samsung

Hahaha!!! Funny!!! I am looking at the Samsung HLT6189 and the Sony KDS60A2020 SXRD`. There are no stores in town, where I can see the 2 sets side by side to compare the picture. Do you think the Sony is really a superior picture to the Samsung??? Are they both the same technology?(LED/DLP) They are similar in price.Thanx in advance....Nick. (=

sony v. samsung 1080p
May 24, 2006 3:00PM PDT

I looked at both side by side at Circuit City in Eugene, Oregon. If there is a difference in picture quality, it was erased by the difference in price. At five hundred dollars less for the Samsung I will never notice any difference. They are both that good! Both can be had for less than CC prices with a little i-net searching.

I found the Sony for $400 less than CC at Video Only along with a $60/yr extended service plan (starting AFTER the mfg. waranty ends) that includes bulb replacements. They didn't have the Samsung in yet, so I am waiting for its arrival.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I'm still trying to find a store around here that has both (close to each other) so I can compare. My local Best Buy has the Sony and a 61" Samsung 1080p, but they are 60 feet from each other, with different lighting.

i work at circuit city and we hav the 56" samsung sitting next to the 50" SXRD. this samsung is NOT the same model as the 61" u hav been seeing. this samsung has been out for only a few weeks and alot of stores do not hav it. We watched the demos and thought the SXRD looked better. i later switched and used the samsung demo on the SXRD and the sony demo on the samsung. the samsung looked as good(a little better bc dlp does darker blacks than lcd projections) as the SXRD w/ the sony demo. basically picture quality is identical on the two tvs and since the samsung is about $900 cheaper and has that awsome thin black frame i say get the samsung. i personally am orderind a 50" samsung (the 87 not the 86 like the old 61" 1080p) bc the picture is the same for a cheaper price.

I hate to bring this up because I blow so much about my toshiba 72" that most folks here hate me ha ha anyway after a year of checking out every display I could find I chose the Toshiba d.l.p. and I will never regret it and this mith about color wheels, fans is just that have had no problems + I dont mind spending $200 every 3 years on a bulb steweee

Sounds like a darned good observation to me
Nov 13, 2006 9:27AM PST

especially considering the source. Get out to a store & see for yourself. Yes, as a disclosure statement, I am a DLP guy. I should be able to face up to periodic bulb replacements as the DLPs are a cost effective way to get into big screens. Not that I'm going to argue with any plasma recommender, the DLP just shaves money off the price of entry relative to the other alternatives.

By the way, the early reviews I read about the LED DLP from Samsung was that it's picture performance wasn't up to that of the "conventional" recent models. Darn shame. I'd love to go for a LED DLP down the line, but with time, who knows what will have highest appeal then. It will be awhile for me.

the new samsungs are not the same as that 61" u saw! THE NEW ONES ARE ALLLOOOTTT better. the 61" is the old model and looks like hell compared to the new ones.

Agree too!
May 26, 2006 4:31PM PDT

The newest Samsung (Generation 7) has an "87" suffix in the model number. I too have seen a side by side comparison and agree that it is superior to the previous model and equal to the Sony SRXD. I too am trying to decide between the two.
(Minor)Note that if you choose the Samsung, there is no matching stand yet available. The SRXD does have a nice stand BUT the middle shelf area is too shallow and a large center speaker may be a problem.

I too, am considering both models and have seen both. Sears (in California, at least)has both models on display and will match pricing plus 10% if you find either model cheaper at any other retail outlet. Happy shopping.

Jun 12, 2006 12:52AM PDT

Hello hoping you can help,

I was in cirut city this weekend and was looking at the same tv you go, although we were not anywhere near the price you go and that is more where I'd like to be, how did you get it so low? Also do you have your tv yet, so you love it? Did you get extra speakers, how is the sound otherwise is it good enough to use the internal speaker for a while before getting the surround sounds? thanks

Getting the Samsung...
May 30, 2006 12:44AM PDT

I finally saw the Sony SXRD and Samsung 50" HL-S5087W side-by-side at Circuit City. I stood back 10 feet and the Samsung picture, in my opinion only, was better. Plus I like the look of the Samsung TV better, it weighs less, and costs less. They are both fantastic TVs, but I think Samsung has won me over.

I am glad
May 30, 2006 1:09AM PDT

that others are noticing what I noticed in a visit to Circuit City. The new Samsungs have a greatly improved picture or so it seemed to me. I also like that they have a brigtht picture since my great room has high ambient light. I am looking at the 61" and have not found it in stock yet. That gives me a little more time to research and compare. Some of the info I have seen states that these Samsungs with the 87 # will accept 1080p. The info write up at Crutchfields made that statement. What have you guys found out?

DUKELOVER NEED YOU FEEDBACK PLEASE
Jun 9, 2006 12:03PM PDT

When you stood back and compaired the Sony l.c.d. set next to the Samsung d.l.p. set did you notice a jagged edge effect with the Sony compaired the the Samsung? I agree every l.c.d. set I have seen has this effect please reply before all the Sony folks kill me ha ha

- Collapse -
Didn't notice..
Jun 12, 2006 4:43AM PDT

I didn't notice any jagged edge effect on the Sony when I was looking. The Sony was beautiful, but the Samsung (for my eyes) was more beautiful. The image seemed crisper and cleaner. I watched the two TVs for a good 30 minutes and for me, the Samsung out-performed the Sony. Plus, it was cheaper and fit into my entertainment center.

Are any of the Sony SXRD sets actually 1080p?
May 30, 2006 3:39AM PDT

I was really excited about the KDS-R60XBR1 and I looked at it at my local Best Buy and was really impressed. But I took a step back when I realized it didn't accept a 1080p signal and wouldn't be fully compatible with Blu-Ray, PS3, etc.
Has anyone seen the Samsung HL-S6187W? It's supposed to fully accept 1080p, but I have yet to see any reviews on how it actully looks.

I continue to wait before I drop several grand on something that's not going to compatible with technology that is right around the corner

From what I've read...
May 30, 2006 4:34AM PDT

I read this somewhere on this forum:

The Sony SXRD has a native 1080p resolution but the HDMI plug in the back is not capable of receiving that much information. The most the HDMI will receive is 1080i. The TV upconverts it back to 1080p. So with blueray, 1080p goes from the DVD player, right when it gets into the TV it goes down to 1080i, and the TV upconverts it back to 1080p.

I can only tell you I saw the Sony 50" SXRD and the Samsung HL-S5087W 1080p TVs side-by-side and they were both impressive. Well above 720p TVs. I'm sure you won't go wrong with either a Sony or Samsung 1080p.

sxrd demo on both tvs
May 31, 2006 7:00AM PDT

we put the sxrd demo on both tvs today (samsung hls5687w and sony 50" sxrd) and the samsung looked way better. they were side by side and the six inch larger samsung looked a great deal better than the 50 sxrd and WAY better than the 60 sxrd. it looks nicer w/ the thin black bezel and the the picture is quite a bit better(probably bc it is true 1080p not upscaled 1080i). everyone at circuit city agreed that the samsung looked better so at a cheaper price y not get it?

PS the sxrd has a little better sound but u r gettin surround sound neway right Happy

If you make the plunge for Samsung, Check out BestBuy online....they are running a special $300 off making the 61" version only $3099 almost $1000 less than the SXRD. Note there is no matching stand (yet) for the Samsung if that is important to you.
