New system, no display

Dec 21, 2004 3:37PM PST

I just put together a new system with these parts:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Asus K8N NForce3
1024 RAM
Maxtor 120 gb hard drive
ATI Radeon 9600XT
I haven't installed windows yet.

When I boot it up, there is no display. The hard drive LED lights up, and the system beeps once, but nothing shows up on the monitor. Can anybody help?

Thanks.

The usual...

1. Extra mounting post short out the backside of the motherboard.
2. A new builder puts everything into the box rather than just what's needed for a display to show.
3. dead parts. One of the evil problems for builders. Finding Waldo is easier.

What does one need for just the display?

I'm a new builder, and I put everything in. Also, how much can the motherboard flex when you put things in? Because the board was bending a bit when I put certain things in. There were no extra mounting posts, though, so I don't think that's it.

It flexes a bit...

But the short list is...

CPU/HSF, Motherboard, PSU (power), 1 set of RAM (or whatever amount is the least needed). And a video card. Even the front connections are optional with just the PWR ON being the only needed connection.

Turned out it was some bad RAM

So now I get a display. The problem now is it won't boot up. I can get into the BIOS and it detects all of the devices, but after the POST stuff it goes into the "choose which mode of Windows" screen. No matter which one I choose, it ends up rebooting. So frustrating. How can I fix this? Thanks for your help.

Did you install Windows?

Some try to move a hard disk over with Windows installed on some other hardware and learn a new lesson.

DOS seems to survive such moves the best!
