New some help with a few things

Jun 11, 2005 1:20PM PDT

I am using Mircosoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP2
IE 6

I just bought a new computer and deleting a few programs that came with the computer that I know I don't need. For some reason Windows is not remembering that I deleted them, I use the Add/Remove program and I am the Administrater and the only one using the computer.

Also the images (pages) inside the windows do not fit the window they are smaller.

I did not recieve a Windows XP install disc, as computers don't come with them now. Is there anyway to get the disks that came with this computer?

I hope I have given enough information if not more information about my system in on my profile.

thank you very much for all your help
ciao

What brand of computer?
Jun 11, 2005 8:55PM PDT

Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem.

If it was me, I'd be requesting the CDs needed to reinstall the operating system, drivers and software I paid for when I bought the computer.

Delete?
Jun 12, 2005 4:57AM PDT

How did you delete the programs? If you just delete the shortcuts and folders Windows won't know they're gone. Installed programs are recorded in the registry.

Btw, you should really get a decent graphics card. That onboard one is just such a waste on an expensive computer... ^_^

Installation Disc's
Jun 12, 2005 12:32PM PDT

I rang Sony and they told me that their products do not come with intallation disc's or recovery disc's.

But he told me to make my own recovery disc's through VAIO Recovery Wizard which transfers factory settings onto CD's...

So I made my own Recovery Discs.

I just think after spending so much money on a computer having them install Windows XP and all their other programs isn't fair, I don't want all these extra programs I want a clean computer ...I feel that they could have supplied the recovery CD's.

Or better yet let me install my own windows on my computer.

I hope that someone out there can help me with supplying a website that offers great tips on tweaking..

thanks for all your help this site is amazing and helps me so much thank you so much to everyone.

These are quite complicated, you need to type in and edit the registry, and the specific things they do don't really help much. Besides, I'm not sure if some of these exe files can be trusted.

I don't know any websites, but can think of a few things for you to start.

Don't use IE. Get Firefox, or one of these other free downloadable browsers. This way, you can prevent most spyware/malware from being installed. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set program defaults -> and set Firefox as default browser instead of IE.

Get adware/spyware scanners, and run them regularily. They allow you to remove malware.
Spybot S&D is a good free one.

Some programs run at Windows startup. Go to COntrol Panel -> Startup, and remove any programs that you don't need. Less programs to run means less boot time, and better performance.
