Since there is no start it should not show.

Did you try adding a start button such as Classic Shell?

Start in problem
Sep 5, 2013 11:11PM PDT

I have no idea what Classic Shell is. But, there are other shortcuts on the desktop that have Pin to start and Pin to Task Bar available in the right click menu.

The other thing is I am running a bat file as a utility. Battery Report is the name of it.

- What's the relation between the one thing (no 'pin to' on shortcut) and the other thing (you are running a batch file)?
- What do you mean with "run a bat file as a utility"?
- What exactly has that name "battery report"? The bat-file (battery-report.bat?)? Why do you think the name is relevant?

Interesting.

As a stock Windows 8.0 has not start button would you consider this a bug or design flaw? I would.

1. I use BatteryBar to see what my battery is up to.
2. Classic Shell seems to be easy to find.

bat file w/no pin to functionality
Sep 6, 2013 7:57AM PDT

kess_b--

There is no relevancy in the name of a .bat file, but there is relevancy in the type of file.

Bob--

I watched a 10 minute clip on Classic Shell. Slick, but I don't want a WIN7 Or XP computer.

I have done some research on my desktop. When I create a shortcut where a bat file is to be run, I have no Pin to start or pin to task bar options. When I create an exe file short cut I do not have any problem. Actually, it seems, that it only works on executables.

What am I missing?

Nothing at all.

It sounds as if you are explaining some of the issues Windows 8 has. I agree that the idea of pinning to the Start button is flawed as there is no start button.

As to the taskbar that's been discussed and folk appear to work around it.
http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-8/108546-pin-shortcuts-taskbar-metro.html

The taskbar doesn't know what a .BAT file is so without diving into a discussion about how the lead at MSFT was trying to kill off old ideas, I think we're done.

Mistake .....
Sep 6, 2013 12:35PM PDT

Hi,
We have been talking about two different things. When you choose Pin to start the OS creates a tile on the Start page. I know there is no start button or start menu, but there is a Start page with Start written on it.
Run a test. Go to File Explorer and right click on a .exe. You should see on the menu a choice to Pin to start.

So I take it that Win 8 doesn't do this natively?
Sep 7, 2013 1:24AM PDT

If one has to add that software then isn't this broke?

I offered a non-software workaround and you found the other add this software workaround.

PS. Microsoft is continuing it's thuggish control as we read:
"WARNING! The Pin to 8 application will not work properly witn Windows 8.1 RTM. Microsoft has disabled the programmatic access to Start Screen items pinning. This is impossible to fix."

I agree

I agree with you. It is broken.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
