New setup questions

Nov 20, 2004 11:17PM PST

I've just purchased a new Dell for my daughter and plan on using D-Link to network with my PC that I built. I've not worked with any network so I'm grasping at straws here.

Her bedroom is directly above my computer. We'd like to just share the broardband connection.

I'm going with the D-Link DI-624 Router.

Since my computer will never move (room restraints) and it has onboard ethernet, do I need an adapter?

Since her computer is new, will it void the warranty if I open it up and put DWL-G520 adapater in it or can I go with the DWL-G120 which is USB? Would I loose bandwidth on her end if we go external USB?

Suggestions?!

"Since my computer will never move (room restraints) and it has onboard ethernet, do I need an adapter?"

A hard wired connection is always preferable to a wireless connection but not always as convenient. So if you can run CAT5 to the PC near the router, do so.

You may have to ask Dell that question. They may void if you crack open the case. USB is the easier way to go.

Only in PC to PC LAN transfers. Your internet connection will not slow as the 802.11g standard provides speeds up to 54mbps while your broadband is significantly less.
