Assuming your installing XP
Jul 10, 2007 10:14PM PDT

Not sure about Vista, but if you are trying to install XP, then you need to have the CD as the first boot device.

update
Jul 11, 2007 1:40AM PDT

what i have done since my last post is open the comp back up and pull out the BIOS battery so it would reset the BIOS and then i put back together and hooked it all back up and turned it on. i got a screen that gives me the option to hit F1 and open setup or hit F2 and continue with defaults. i chose F2 this second time around and it started to format the HDD. after that i basically just stopped and did the same thing it did after we changed the boot order. so i did the battery thing again and hit F2 again and it installed windows....then did that thing again.....so i did the battery thing another time and this time I hit F1 and looked around the setup menu and then I enable the BIOS to do something like run tests when it boot. then it did the same thing again.....i gave up and went to bed after that

That my first move also..

except I use a startup floppy instead of a cd. This will bootup the computer to a DOS prompt. This will tell you the computer is at least functioning. Give that a try.

Two Things...
Jul 11, 2007 10:28AM PDT

1. If the 250 GB hard drive is a SATA drive, make sure you have the SATA drivers on a floppy disc.

2.. Change the boot order so the CD drive loads first, then the floppy.

Well, maybe three things...

3. Access the BIOS and disable "Native SATA Support" if it's listed there.

Hope this helps.

1. my comp does not have a floppy drive...did not see the point while building it... and
2. i cant access the BIOS and have the changes take affect...because everytime i shut it down...i need to pop the BIOS battery...which resets the BIOS....ya....

Shouldn't Need To Do Anything With The Battery..
Jul 12, 2007 9:39AM PDT

Leave the battery alone. If you can't reset the BIOS and have the computer boot from the CD, then you've got other problems that need to be fixed.. Have you replaced the battery recently? If not, please do.

It could be lots of things.. Some of which you didn't answer from my first suggestions above.. Is the hard drive a SATA drive? Whether or not you have a floppy drive, you'll need to install the SATA drivers somehow.. I use a USB floppy drive on laptops..

Another question...Are you using a brand new, legal, Windows XP SERVICE PACK 2 disc to install from?? You'll need SP2 to install to the large drive.. If not, your success will be doubtful.

If you can get into the BIOS the first time, but restarting causes a lockup, then your motherboard is probably bad.. Shorts and such can cause such issues and only a new motherboard will fix it..

If the DVD/CD drive won't boot, the problem could be with a bad drive connection or a short in the drive itself.. It could be causing the entire problem.. Try disconnecting the DVD/CD drive and see if you can then adjust the BIOS settings, turn off the computer, restart the computer, and still see the correct BIOS again.. If so, you need a new drive.

(And YES, I read your post titled "Odd" below.)

Hope this helps.

Best Buy
Jul 11, 2007 2:02PM PDT

ok....so...i took it to the best buy geek squad.....they inspected it and noticed that the fan on the power supply is not working...so that most likely means my power supply is faulty....does anyone agree this could cause the problem??

if you have no floppy drive
Jul 11, 2007 2:25PM PDT

A: set the BIOS set-up as "None" for the "A" drive
B: disable "seek the floppy at start up" or similar wording

and i have to say, in all the time i have messed with computers, i don't remember the last time i touched the battery....

why do you have to remove yours?

why
Jul 11, 2007 3:03PM PDT

that, my fried, is the right question....(quote from I robot anyone?)...im not sure why and that is basically what i am trying to figure out....if i knew why....wouldnt i be able to correct this issue?? or at least ask the question that will provide the answer to fix my issue??? i dont know what is wrong....and about the power supply thing...i just read in the manual that the fan wont turn on until it reaches a certain temp...ya....*** do i do?

first thing that comes to mind is " i cant access the BIOS and have the changes take affect...because everytime i shut it down...i need to pop the BIOS battery...which resets the BIOS"

it may reset it, but it may not give you what you want....

next time you see "hit F1 to enter setup" set your boot drive as CD Rom, put your XP CD into the drive and then press the 'reset' button...

Jul 12, 2007 5:28AM PDT

ok.....im not sure *** is going on....but ya.....everyone that intends to reply MUST READ THIS POST....anyways....ok...I first turned it on for the first time ever and i got a black screen that said F1 to run setup or F2 to set defaults and continue....if i hit F1 and exit that my computer goes into a kind of hibernation mode...where it is still on but not sending anything to the monitor....if i try to turn it off then back on it is that same way....i then have to pop the BIOS battery in order to reset the BIOS so i can get that screen again...i then select F2 and set the deafults and continue on....from here my hard drive formatted then it did the same hibernation like thing again....then i had to pop the battery again.....i hit F2 again and it acted normal and installed windows....all of a sudden the hibernation thing happened again....then i popped the battery then hit F2 then it booted up with windows...i went to install my internet and my internet was like "you need to shutdown your computer" so i did then it did the same hibernation crap thing again when i booted it back up.....then i had to pop the battery again and this time i followed jonah's advice and when i hit the reset button it came up with the same black screen...i hit F2 and then it was like please reinsert your internet CD so it can finish installing...i did....and....well ok i dont have an ethernet card thing but my motherboard has an etehrnet port so it shouldnt matter...ill deal with that problem later...anyway....basically whenever i want to use my computer....it cant be for too long and i have to pop the battery everytime i want to start it up.....from what i have been able to tell is that people are not reading the whole thing and i felt i needed to type it out again so people will read it....i tried to describe to the point where it would make sense....please help me.....ugghhh
