New security features for Windows

Improved Service Packs for Server 2003 and XP to be released this year

In a further attempt to improve security, Microsoft has announced the release of Service Packs for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for the second half of this year.

New shielding measures will allow enterprises using Windows Server 2003 to block access to their systems from companies whose security procedures are not up to standard.

For those using Windows XP, Service Pack 2 will include a new security tool to stop viruses and worms by monitoring known vulnerabilities, removing the need for the IT department to immediately patch problems.

Our WinXP SP1 came with the machine we had built for us in 12/02. Does anyone know if SP2 will be prohibitively large to download on dialup?

Hi William,

http://www.arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/04q1/sp2-beta-1.html mentioned that the the size of XP SP2 is 222MB. This is maybe the network install copy of SP2 Beta. Not sure on the size of XP SP2 Express install (via Windows Update).

Does anyone know if SP2 will be prohibitively large to download on dialup?
No idea but a CD will surely become available just like SP1a for users who has dialup connection.

Donna,

SP1a? I did not know there was an "a". All I know is that on the WinXP CD that came with our machine, it says SP1 on it. Now I'm wondering what I may have to do in order to be current. Nothing ever shows up when I check the Windows Update site. Unless it updated long ago and I did not even catch it.

Going to your link for SP1a, I go around in circles looking for specifically ONLY the fixes that 1a provides. I simply cannot find a KB article that speaks to this issue.

In other words, I'm trying to find what 1a does that is NOT on SP1 and I cannot find that info.

Do not worry about getting SP-1a. Most people do not need it and the only change is the elimination of Microsoft Virtual Machine due to a dispute with Sun. Use Google and you will find something about this. I never got it because I did not want to loose MVM.

Good luck!

Glenn,

This is not a matter of sending more paintballs, it is a case of giving you the STORE ! Assuming that what you say is true.

And I've never had an occasion to question you.

Save the one time "in-bed" relationship you once had with Norton.

But, we can all forgive past transgressions, can we not? Happy

So, at this point, are we even, or must I transfer ownership of the only paintball factory I own to one who, without my knowing your TRUE intentions, might ship said assets over to China or Taiwan or Indonesia or INDIA...???

William,

Hold the STORE for now and mark one up for YOU! Not only are we EVEN but I now owe you!!! One point of clarification though... no assets will be transferred... from what I see they have already been SHIPPED. :^O

Maybe you should discontinue the morning "Wheaties" for a while. That post was too good... you must have stayed up all night planning how to shoot me down and real good! Wink

Serriously you do not need that SP-1a as you only give something up. Even Microsoft said at the time that it was not recommended if you already had SP-1.

Glenn,

Nonsense, I did not upstage you in the least. The truth of the matter is, you have just save my wife and myself a lot of extra work and not only do I owe you the paintshop store, I'm ready to sign over my non-existent SS treasure trove to you for your golden years. Happy
