General discussion

new search engine

Mar 8, 2006 6:37PM PST

I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.0 on my computer. According to the New York Times, Microsoft has just created a new search engine (www.live.com). But when I type a subject into this search engine, nothing happens. Can anyone tell me why? Thank you.

Javascript issue?
Mar 9, 2006 1:36AM PST

The entire site relies on javascript, so if it's not working that's the first place I'd look. First, go tools->internet options->security, select Internet, click "default level," and use the slider to set the security at medium. You can use custom settings if you want, but under Scripting you'll have to make sure everything's either marked enable or prompt.

If that doesn't work, try an alternative browser, such as Firefox, before going any further to determine if this is a browser or system issue. If it works with Firefox, click here to download/run IEFix, and if it still won't work click here for instructions for repairing Internet Explorer. If it does not work with Firefox, try clicking here to download the Windows Scripting Engine, followed by a check of your security software, which may be blocking javascript as a precautionary measure.

Hope this helps,
John

Just tried it myself...
Mar 9, 2006 11:49AM PST

It appearantly does require JAVA. It took about 3 minutes to load, and when it fully loaded a message displayed something about the site server having problems and to try again later. I tried to search CNET and after a moment the mesage displayed again and the page tried reloading. After closong the page my XP Home sp2 IE6 machine forze and I had to restart the computer.

I don't know about anyone else but it will be a while be I try it again.
