New Samsung HLR Series

Jun 6, 2005 7:39AM PDT

Does anyone know what improvements Samsung has made on their new HLR line of DLP TVs over the older HLP line? I know the HLP used the HD3, I can't see what chip the new ones have. It seems they raised prices about 25% and I was wondering what you get for the increased price.

actually they have dropped the prices almost $500 each over the starting prices from last year. The contrast ratio is now 2000:1 for the table tops and they don't really list what chip they are using but I believe its the HD2+ chip they are using

The pitch of the lenticular screen itself is finer so it looks less grainy.

HLR4667W and HLR4677W

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Samsung HLR4667W and HLR4677W models? Why does the "77" cost more?

The Samsung HL-R4667W is more advanced than the 4677
Jun 8, 2005 12:06PM PDT

The 4677 has a 6 segment color wheel at 9000 rpm.
The 4777 has a 7 segment color wheel at 10,800 rpm.

The 67 has a PC input.
The 77 has no PC input.

The 67 has a 2500 to 1 contrast ratio.
The 77 has a 2000 to 1 contrast ratio.

The 67 has 1 HDMI and DVI input.
The 77 has just 1 HDMI input.

The 67 has a 1394 (firewire) input for digital camcorders.
The 77 has no 1394 input.

The 67 is silver and black.
The 77 is all black.

Frankly, I can't see any advantage of the 77 over the 67 except that it is more attractive.

Here is the link for the 67.

minor correction
Jun 8, 2005 12:45PM PDT

When I read the last post, I was excited as I thought that the 67 only had HDMI. According to the manual available on Samsung's site, the 67 has a single HDMI that will also accept DVI (with HDMI/DVI cable) plus what they call DVI Audio inputs which are just digital audio inputs for use when connected to a DVI device.

I wish it had both HDMI and DVI as that would solve my connection dilemma.

Thank you for the correction - just 1 HDMI on 67 series.
Jun 8, 2005 8:18PM PDT

That's right. The Samsung 67 series has one HDMI. As with the 77, you can get a DVI to HDMI converter and then use the DVI audio input. However, since it has a cable card slot, you can skip the cable box and still have room for a DVD HDMI connection. I must say, however, that the newest HD cable boxes from Scientific Atlanta have a built in HD-DVR that records 85 hours of HD programming. And you would then want to use the HDMI slot, leaving no room for the HDMI equipped DVD player.

The 88 series has 2 HDMI slots and a cable card.

Only 1 HDMI
Jun 9, 2005 11:26AM PDT

emileg, You hit my dilemma on the nose. I?ll be getting an HD/DVR and a DVD player, both with HDMI. I don?t want to spend the extra ~$1K for the 88 series (nor wait until Samsung actually releases them), but I can?t hook both up straight to the 67 series. I?m temped to go to the ?older? 63 series that has one HDMI and one DVI, but lower contrast, etc.

Anyone have any thoughts on 67 vs 63 or a way to connect two HDMI?s into one?

Samsung 78 series with 2 HDMI Inputs
Jun 9, 2005 11:43AM PDT

Samsung is introducing the 78 tabletop series in 50, 56, 61 and 71 inches, with 1080p. I think the 61 inch will be the first one out, hopefully by end of June.

Here is the link to Samsung's Spec Sheet on the 78 series. It is not posted at Samsung's web site, but rather at Comcast Cable.

http://home.comcast.net/~ucsb/78-series.pdf

Vanns.com is selling the hl-r6178w for $3999.
JR.com is selling the hl-r5688W for $3999.
Both are authorized Samsung dealers.

My understanding is that the 78 series is internally the same as the 88 but without the pedestal and the side speakers.

Happy shopping.

don't forget the vertically mounted light engine and teh 5000:1 contrast. I still say the pedestal will outshine the other models but I guess we will have to wait and see.

67 vs 77 pix quality..??
Jun 27, 2005 1:17PM PDT

Has anyone compared pix quality between them??? I definately need the 77 because it is not as wide. 77is only 39.3 inches and the 67 is 42.8 inches wide.

Which is only 39.3 inches?
Jul 31, 2005 1:11PM PDT

you said the 4677W is only 39.3 inches? the product literature i read shows the width as 40.6".

my entertainment cabinet can only fit 39.5" so i need a set that is a little less than that (plus i'll lose functionality of all the side buttons and things).

samsung has a 42" 4266W that is 42" but it doesn't have PC connection or as good of a comb filter, etc. I wish they had a 42" 4267W model or 4278W model. sony has a new 42" KDFE42A10 coming out that is also 39.4" that will "sort of" fit in my cabinet as well.

So can you clarify the 39.3 inches on the 77 Samsung?

ur right,,40.6''
Aug 2, 2005 2:43AM PDT

Sorry...ur right... i was thinking of the HL-R4266W that is 39.3''. I am lucky I can use the 4677w at 40.6'' if I put it in at an angle, then straighten after it is in the cabinet. Did u find the Sony 42 u mentioned ?? I would like to see that to.

Sony vs. Samsung 42"
Aug 2, 2005 3:41AM PDT

the sony is on this site KDF-E42A10 but it has 1 HDMI port, lower resolution than last years budget LCD and doesn't have PIP. Unlike the Samsung 4266W though it does have a PC input which is something I want. Then again, can I just use the S-Video port on my PC to hook up the display? I've tried on my CRT tv but the picture is so blurry and horrible but I'm thinking an LCD would be different.

You should take a look at Sony's website. It's unfortunate no one seems to be making good 42'' sets - they are all missing an important feature that the similar 46-50'' ones have...

According to a salesman at Tweeter I spoke with...the 67 uses an older chip than the 77. The 77 uses the HD2+ chip which I imagine gives a better picture than the 67.

salespeople need to do homework
Jun 27, 2005 9:37PM PDT

I have no idea why there is so much misimformation by salespeople regarding the HLR series. It seems like they are still talking about last year's chipset. With the HLRs, Samsung is trying not to use the whole HD2, HD3 etc... terms. But, you could call the XX67, XX77 series the HD4 and the XXX8 the xHD4 (1080p). The chips in the 67 (and I think 77) are 5th generation and noticabley better than last year's 67 model. They are even nicer then the pedestal models HD2+ from last year as well.
