New Rig/Vista Business- restarts computer when i watch video

Apr 5, 2007 10:51PM PDT

Hey everyone,
Ive got a brand new rig, just picked it up a week ago
Intel e6400 processor
Intel Executive DQ965GF Mobo
GeForce 8800 GTS (320)
2 gigs of Ram
320 gig HD
and Windows Vista 32 bit Business
I've updated my BIOS, and video card drivers etc

The problem is, everytime I try to watch a video or dvd the computer just automatically shutsdown and restarts (blue screen for liek 2 sec)
Now the thing is, if im watching a dvd (using power dvd/win dvd, or media player with nvidia purevideo), then the computer will restart at any random time but its usually correlated to when the video isn't full screen, and im doing stuff in the background (like typing emails etc)
Because of this, i thought it might just be something that has to do with the video/dvd/and operating system conflict, but then again when i just watch normal avi/divx, videos in media player ive had the computer restart on me, when ive adjusted the screen size, fast forwarded, and just simply watched etc.

does anyone have any ideas on whats goin on? or have heard of this problem and can give me some reassurance that im not the only one thats having these messed up video problems.
(btw the video card works fine in games, and nvidia demo things, so i dont think its a problem of the video card independently, probably drivers im guessing)
Cheers,

Sean

What I would do.

Undo the BIOS update, if possible. If not, set it to "safe defaults" or whatever it's called.
Then reinstall the OS using the original drivers that came with the machine.

If problems persist it's a warranty issue. They might object, however, because of your BIOS update.

Good luck with this problem.

=( no luck

Thanks for the reply Kees,
i reinstalled vista fresh,
kept the mobo drivers as is, upgraded to the nvidia vista drivers only and still, ive had no luck. Just watching a divx file on media player crashed when i resized the frame.
id understand tthis if i didnt have 2 gigs of ram and 8800 gts, but it doesnt make sense cause my computer has all necessary power, but keeps crashing when displaying movies

any other suggestions?
cheers

"divx file on media player" = clue.

Microsoft's player has always had issues with that. Try it with VLCPLAYER to narrow it down to this or something else.

vlc didnt help
Apr 6, 2007 11:01AM PDT

i tried vlc player,
first thing was the divx played, but with no picture, only audio.
and the second time i tried to play it with another divx file, the comp restarted..
... this is really starting to bug me, especialy cause i can play something like c&c tiberian wars on full settings maxed with no problems, but when trying to play a simple video, its sketchy

Try these steps for bluescreen
Apr 6, 2007 12:59PM PDT

The problem can be because of incompatible drivers or any other software that is involved in viewing of divx video. When the computer blue screens, there is usually an error message on the blue screen pointing to the bad driver/dll/program. In the System->Change Settings->Advanced->Startup and Recovery->Settings->System Failure->Write debugging information, select Complete Memory dump. This will create a memory dump on blue screen which can be analyzed by debugging tools available from Microsoft to exactly pinpoint the offending driver or program. However this process is for experts only. Once the offending program or driver is identified, you can update it or make sure it is Vista compatible.

Sometimes blue screen is due to interaction between two different programs which will run happily in isolation but create problems when run together. I would still say that you check the video and sound drivers for Vista compatibility. Also try to play divx files after shutting down all other programs. If you rigged the computer yourself, check the main memory for compatibility.

i found the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for all the help guys,
the suggestions all gave me motivation to fix the problem,
but i found that the problem was the

Sigma tel onboard sound that comes with the Intel DQ965Gf that has caused these problems with dvd/divx/xvid

i disabled the onboard sound and everything worked perfectly (although theres no sound at all), so im gonna switch motherboards tomorrow, and pick up one of those Asus P5B's

any other suggestions for motherboards? im gonna wait on an external soundcard till creative makes some later this year, so switching motherboards for diff onboard sound is key for me.
