>>Tom DeLay's claim that a lavish trip to Britain in 2000 with two lobbyists conformed to House ethics rules has been undercut by new revelations about the funding of that trip, some ethics experts said Sunday.<<

I have a feeling that the neo-cons in the forum
Apr 24, 2005 10:22PM PDT

are going to point out that there are corrupt Democrats floating around congress rather than see Delay for what he is.
If so,it is a ,by now, boring non-sequitor. For the record in my part of the world the 16th former Suffolk County Republican official has just pleaded guilty to fiscal malfeasance..but one crooks crimes has no bearings on those of another!

In my part of the world it is overwhelmingly Democrats who

wind up jail. Of course, most of the politicians in Cook County are Democrats.

This happens all the time LEGALLY AND ETHICALLY within the rules of the House. Both parties. The "neocons" aren't trying to excuse one "corruption" by pointing out others. Rather it should be pointed out the hypocrisy of the selective outrage over DeLay.

Doubt that but you will find that many conservatives ...

will indeed mention the hypocracy of the liberals crying wolf about relatives being paid for their work on campaigns and travel of representatives funded by outside interests.

Both are legal practices within certain established limits and Delay has not crossed those limits. If those liberals actually do think so then they would do well to commit to a bi-partisan investigation of all who are doing these things.

"I'm not a crook".........
Apr 24, 2005 11:56PM PDT

famous last words from a Rep President who was forced to resign in shame, pardoned immediately by Ford (what a joke decision THAT was), became a friend to China, brought Pandas to the USA, and was buried as a 'respected' political figure. I will NEVER get over how people actually accepted this guy as someone respectful and forgave him and allowed him to act on our behalf with other countries again. He disgusted me to no end and still does.

Dem or Rep....if you're a crook, you deserve to be punished for it. And you should have a freaking trial. You chose a public life, and if you can't handle the heat of your life being scrutinized, don't enter the kitchen in the first place.

Both party sides, nationwide, at every level, should be held accountable for everything they do since they were elected by the people and have to answer to them. Our taxes are paying their salaries and bennies to give them free rides to screw us all.....make them pay it all back when they get caught with their hands in the till or their lies and skeletons catch up with them. Come clean from the start of a campaign on anything you think might reflect badly later on if it comes out, and let the people decide AHEAD of time if you merit the vote. Stop wasting our time to vote for jerks that we now have to waste money on to get rid of, too.

A secret is only a secret
Apr 25, 2005 12:38AM PDT

when only one person knows what it is.....as soon as it is told to somebody else (or somebody else was part of the secret to begin with), it's only a matter of time before everybody else finds it out.

Secrets get found out only because human egoes being what they are, the need to share the info is overwhelming.....you tell a priest, a therapist, your spouse, your 'best' friend, whomever, and it's no longer a secret. It's nearly impossible to keep it to yourself.....and politicians/terrorists/etc are ridiculous about keeping tapes or notes or bragging and they are always found out. Paper trails especially are the easiest to track, and it seems that most times, notes are the downfall. People keep them in order to 'recall' the event/secret and either relive it because it gave them sick pleasure or refresh their memories to keep their story straight. Books they've written as bios or facts about their lives usually are the downfall as they get picked apart by journalists somewhere....but the original ego trip that caused the book to be written is stronger than common sense as they embellish history.

The Nixon Pardon
Apr 25, 2005 12:35AM PDT

Hi Toni:

At the time Ford pardoned Nixon, I was also outraged. It smelled of a prearranged deal ("I'll make you President if you'll pardon me").

Over the years I came to believe otherwise. First off, apparently Ford WAS in fact offered a few "incentives" to become Nixon's VP, but was too thick to recognize the bribe attempts when he heard them, and thus they were never agreed to. This, after all, is the man who was convinced that Jack Ruby wasn't working for the mob because (paraphrasing) "I asked him if he was working for the mob and he said 'No.'" Ladies and gentlemen, meet 1/7 of the Warren Commission.

I also came to believe that the pardon was, in fact, the best way to start the healing process and that in accepting it, Nixon was admitting to criminal acts. He was disgraced and he was out of office, and that was the most important thing.

There was no healing process
Apr 25, 2005 12:40AM PDT

for the country he screwed......only a healing process for a now pardoned criminal. The country never got the trial we deserved thanks to Ford, the wimp. Justice IS the healing process.....we just got screwed a second time by the new Pres.

allowed him to act on our behalf with other countries again.

I was a bit young when all of this transpired, but have greater awareness with age of his post-Presidency. I don't recall his following in the footsteps of the likes of Jimmy Carter on the foreign stage. Did I miss something?

Quite frankly, I think ALL ex-Presidents and members of their administrations should tread very lightly acting on the world stage once they are no longer in official positions. Clinton (and many of his officials) seem to have ushered in a new era of post-Presidency that I don't recall. I hope Dubya doesn't follow in his footsteps, and maybe one day the media will refrain from highlighting former officials who criticize administrations they are not fond of.

He went mostly as a 'citizen' when visiting

dignitaries of foreign countries and gave the very real impression, especially in China, of representing the USA as a peace talk type of ambassador. It was disgusting then to think that he was allowed to get away with it as nobody ever stopped him, much like Kerry and Jane in their 'era', and it's just as disgusting to me even after his death to know that he was supposedly representing the very people and country he screwed over badly. While his cohorts all did time, he got the nod from our then current President and others later to keep up the farce that he had never done anything wrong while in Office. What he did is a far cry from Clinton's getting whatever he did on the side, and yet he never even gave a heartfelt apology for anything let alone felt he should pay like the rest of his team. When you compare Arafat to Nixon, I am dumbfounded that anybody in the world could respect either of them, let alone give them the elevated status of world dignitaries showing up for their funerals....at the expense of the people paying for those tributes with either their tax money or their lives.
