new Qosmio video card....please help

Jun 21, 2005 3:01AM PDT

I've been looking at the 15' Qosmio F15 for a while, but now am thinking about the newer, faster, sleeker F25 that's about to come out. Everything from the finish, battery life, ram, hard disk, and cpu have been upgraded on the new model. The only problem is the F25's GeForce 6 GO 6600 has only 64mb of video ram, which is a significant drop from the F15's 128mb GeForce FX GO 5700. Does anybody know how these two cards compare? Thanx for your help...

It's this simple.

For a media center, that's still overkill for a media center. A good move to cut power, heat and increase battery life.

If you are looking for a gamer machine, this wouldn't be it.

Qosmio F15

So even though it sacrifices a bit of battery life, the F15 is a better bet if I want gaming as well as media?

I've seen that model powered up after 6 hours.

It was hot all over. The keyboard was hot and it was not something I'd want to own. Go see one on display after its been on all day. Remember it wasn't playing games which stress it even more.

My advice is to avoid Toshiba till 2006. I have other posts why I write such in this forum. Hint: Return rates.

In that case, what would you recommend?
Jun 22, 2005 12:04AM PDT

I'm looking for a 15.4' notebook that is decently fast, can handle multimedia and games, has bluetooth/wireless connections, plenty of hard drive space, and i'm looking under $2,000. After doing a lot of research, the Qosmio F15 seems to do that the best ($1.5 K, 128mb graphics, 80 gb HD, bluetooth etc. plus the sharpest, brightest screen i've seen).
If you wouldn't go with Toshiba, what would you recommend instead that fits my criteria?
Thanx!

Look at the R4000.

It can be fitted with the ATI 128M card and is just about as good as it gets for gamers plus 64-bit capable so you won't scream about it next year. It's over at compaq.com

Will do...

I'll take a look, but i'm still a bit wary after reading plenty of posts/reviews regarding bad components, build quality, service with HP/Compaq. You're one of the first to mention serious problems with Toshiba...

Not the first.

If you google it with Toshiba GRILL, the story begins. Where it ends?

Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM all get slimed a lot because... there are so many out there. You have to sift the reports a lot to see what each story is.

The top story in my book are those that expected SOFTWARE SUPPORT. Like the man said "forget about it." Today, this is something no vendor has sorted.

toshiba f25
Sep 20, 2005 6:48PM PDT

hi,

Is there any way that the 64mb geforce 6600 pre-installed in the toshiba f25 series be upgraded to a 128mb or 256mb dedicated? Please help. I need your advice... Furthermore, is there another option, say a different type of video card that is also suitable with a 128mb dedicated memory?

Thank you.

What "card?"
Sep 20, 2005 9:19PM PDT

Unless you see cards offered by the laptop maker, then you have your answer. 99.99% of the models have no card to change but chips soldered into place. If this is an issue, get the machine with the video you want.

Thank you for the advice. That would be the pre installed video card in the toshiba f25 series which only has 64mb dedicated memory. would the video card in the Q series which has a dedicated 128mb work for the F25? The make is NVIDIA.

"Card"
Sep 21, 2005 1:38AM PDT

You didn't do the homework it seems. Look at the maker's website and find if they offer replacement cards. If not, you found your answer.

The "card" is not a card but chips soldered on the mainboard. It usually costs as much as an entire laptop to change the mainboard so few ever change the video "card".

still doing my homework
Sep 21, 2005 1:47AM PDT

thank you. I am actually in the process of picking a machine that suits me. Seems like there is no way to increse the size of the memory... my other option is the hp zd8230. What is your view towards that model?

The zd8230 lap burner.
Sep 21, 2005 1:59AM PDT

This is a desktop replacement unit for those that think only a "real" Pentium 4 with HT will do. It's not a notebook.

What are your goals here? There are many units out there with nice dedicated video RAM and 3D chips without going to lap scorching units.

what my goals are....
Sep 21, 2005 2:07AM PDT

well, here it is... my budget is under 2k including tax. what i'm after is 1g ram, at least 100g diskspace, and a very fast clock speed where serious games can be played...

Plenty of those in the states.

The R4000 with the better video comes to mind. It's well under 2000. See if it meets your spec.

ASUS
Sep 21, 2005 5:27AM PDT

You can get an ASUS W1N or V71V for under $2,000. Wither of those will do everything you want, and they're pretty light as well.

No support here.

Sorry, but stateside there is no visible support system. It's a nice idea but I wouldn't.

Depends on where you buy
Sep 21, 2005 6:57AM PDT

There are all kinds of outfits selling ASUS and I'd not buy form some of them. But the ones that have good reviews, Proportable and AGear come to mind, have positive feedback and pretty long warranties standard. That having been said, I'll likely buy a Sony FS690 very shortly. Actually, I think the Sony would meet the needs of the guy who started this thread... it has a GPU with 64MB of resident memory.
