New Printer ? New Problem

Feb 10, 2004 3:02PM PST

I just installed an all-in-one copier, printer, scanner. (Lexmark 1150) Now Windows won?t shut down. I loaded the CD and followed the simple install instructions and everything works fine ? it prints, copies, and scans. (I haven?t tried the Fax) But when I try to shut down, I get the ?Windows is shutting down? screen with a frozen cursor arrow, but no shutdown. I unchecked the ?Lexmark? startup item listed in the System Configuration Utility, but it made no difference. I still have my other printer connected via the normal printer cable. The new printer is connected via a USB cable. Could this be causing a conflict during shutdown?

Re:New Printer ? New Problem = Check for new drivers first.

The industry is stuck in a mode of "ship it now" with drivers that barely work or have an issue, but it prints or such and the thought is that with the internet the buyers will download drivers or call into support to sort it out.

But it must be shipped today.

Did you check for latest drivers?

Bob

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition, Processor Speed: 1.4 GHz, Processor Type: Intel Pentium 4, RAM: 256MB, RAM Technology: PC133 SDRAM, Hard Drive Capacity: 20.0GB, Graphics Support Integration: NVidia Riva TNT2 M64 32mb AGP4X, Installed Graphics Memory: 32MB, Video Bus: AGP 4X, Bus Speed: 400 mhz, Modem Speed: 56.6kbps,
I.E. version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
I couldn't even get to my desktop this evening. The welcome page came up, but the cursor was frozen so I rebooted, pressed f8, and started in safe mode. I couldn't get online, so I restored the system back to Sunday - a point before I installed the new Printer. I haven't tried to shutdown yet, but everything else seems OK. I'll try finding an up-to-date driver and then reinstalling the Printer CD.
Why can't things be simple?

Did you try just unplugging the printer to see if you could boot normally with it plugged in?

When you have a shutdown problem you need to mention what you are seeing on the screen at the point at which it stops shutting down, usually it shows a last screen before you have to hit power to get it to go down.

Here is where you find out tips on resolving shutdown problems for XP.

As I said in my original post: . It can sit for hours and it does not shut down. As for your question "Did you try just unplugging the printer to see if you could boot normally with it plugged in?" No - I haven't unplugged the printer. Everything seems to be working normally now, except for the shutdown problem. I'll try the MKB as you suggested. Thanks.

Unplugging the USB cable allows Windows to shut down normally. I'm talking (via email) with Lexmark about the problem, so hopefully they will know what's going on. Thanks for the advice Happy
