gdavis314,
Welcome to the forum, and I'm sorry to hear your product isn't working properly.
Another consideration would be to exchange the unit from the retailer you purchased it from. Most retailers have a return policy for issues such as these. Is that a possibility?
This is not a major problem, and the symptoms sound like a PCB board inside the television could be malfunctioning. We have a network of service reps that will likely be able to fix your television. I hope this answers some of your questions.
Good call on the firmware.
Keep me posted.

Connected my new PN50A650 Plasma TV for the first time last night. The screen was clearly divided in half. The right side showed rapidly flickering bars of various colors and the left side different colors fickering but slower than on the right. There was a picture behind all this. This occurred with all inputs as well as with all inputs unplugged. Samsung Customer Service gave me a service number after the first person I spoke with (Danielle) hung up on me because I said that her explanation didn't make sense. Amy was much more helpful. My question - is this a major problem? What can I expect from Samsung and its service representatives? Right now I have a very expensive paper weight. Thanks in advance for any insight into this problem. Note: Started to do the firmware upgrade but the version on the TV was higher than the download so didn't do it per instructions.
