You need a modified plan

Basically, there's no amp/receiver with 12 zones built in. You need to find/add a multi-room speaker distribution system for that job. Something similar to a Russound like this:
Russound 12 pair speaker selector

Crutchfield carries some other related equipment you can browse through here:

Why so many Airport Expresses if only one type of music is being listened to at the same time(?) You would only need one, mini-toslink to toslink like this-
Keep it digital for very nice sound quality via a newer receiver.

thanks for the pointers
Can i not use something like a Niles SI-1230 to get to my 12 zones?
yes i will only need 1 x airport express, never thought about that

and now onto speakers, i have no idea here also, all but 6 of mine need to be ceiling speakers, in the main family room i'll be going for mini wall mounted ones

While I haven't used that one personally, if you call up Crutchfield, their advisors are actually somewhat helpful in getting you the correct accompanying equipment (matching receiver, etc.). I have had questions that the manufacturers wouldn't answer during installs and I took a chance calling Crutchfield. Sometimes the nitty gritty small stuff is best for their type of resources via phone. Anything more 'big picture' requires research beforehand elsewhere IME and O.

Good luck, and report back your progress.

Regarding speakers

I don't think you will have any trouble choosing speakers, since you aren't looking for high end products, just something that works. Again, look at the resources on the crutchfield site. It's somewhat detailed.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
