New Mom Looking for a New Camera

I am looking into getting a new camera. I currently have a Nikon Coolpix 7600, which I really like. I am planning on upgrading so I can have more zoom and have a quicker camera. I will be taking pictures of the baby for scrapbooking, calendars (or portrait gifts) and some nice portraits for gifts. I also take pictures of farming equipment in fields working for slide shows and calendars. Also some video capturing would be nice.

I am considering the Nikon D5000. I think it would be a good starter SLR but do I want a large camera to haul around with lenses? An SLR camera might be nice to adapt as the baby becomes a kid at games and school functions.

I also have looked at a Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. I think this camera would be a good upgrade but will have to be upgraded as the baby gets school age and involved in sports.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks.
