New modem slower than old

by buggrit / February 18, 2005 12:46 AM PST

Am almost 100% computer hopeless so be gentle. Just had new fax modem fitted ("Mentor" 56k V.92 with FaxTalk 4.5 software) but it is a lot slower than my previous one, a V.90 (make unknown). Connection speed is 31.2 Kbps as opposed to 45.6Kbps. Have tried reloading drivers, software etc but to no avail.
Since having it fitted, downloading is a nightmare and often times out. Trying to do anything on-line takes an age.
Can anyone advise how I can speed things up to the old Kbps or offer any advice along similar lines?. Thanks.

I have tryed at least a dozen. The best by far are BCM V92. It connects 98% of the time at 50.6 Kbps. The Agere v92 also is good. It connects at 50.6 kbps. 90% of the time. Any of the V90 configuration expect no better than 42-45 Kbps. 40kbps being what microsoft calls average. The BCM is sold as v90, then software updated in windows update to v92 standards & immediate increase in connect speed. Like I say 50.6 kbps you can count on it.
