NO to the X30...
Oct 2, 2005 12:16PM PDT

I've made many posts (here and elsewhere) concerning Windows Mobile 5.0, including this one (click here). In it I mentioned a couple of things users were expecting that never came and a link to an article that details what new features you'll see.

However, it doesn't matter much for either of us, at least for the time being, because WM5 is NOT available for X30 users. In case you're wondering, the Axim community created a petition (with around 1,000 'signatures') to receive the upgrade, and despite the fact Dell successfully ported WM5 to the X30 (they didn't publicly disclose that, but it's true!), they refused to give (or sell) us the upgrade. The upside is that the X30, X50, and now the X51's hardware can't take full advantage of WM5, so we're not missing much, especially when considering that third-party software can plug most holes.

Hope this helps,
John

Here's the reason I heard.

1. While the license fee per unit is all of 15 bucks per to Microsoft, the last big uptick of an Axim OS ended up in the pirate channels and pissed off a lot of people. I'm sure you also read "how to" install that one out on the web. No friends made that round.

2. Discounting the complaint in item 1, there are other considerations. Not only must the OS in the AXIM get an uptick but copies of Outlook and the other support software be distributed (and paid for.)

3. Let me bottomline it to:
a. It's the money.
b. It's the support issues.

Dell would lose more customers over support of such an upgrade than those that want the new OS (today.) Today this is the deal breaker (money, support.)
