New Memory into Acer Tablet!

Sep 23, 2005 11:08AM PDT

Hi, I'm a desktop guy, so bear with with me please. I've replaced many desktop parts, but never a laptop/tablet. I hear its a whole different thing. I'd like to add another 512MB into my laptop. Well, its not a notebook, exactly. Its the Acer TravelMate C110. I don't know where to begin! First of all, I've bought the memory from Acer, with their approval that it will work. Then, where do I put it in? Is it behind the keyboard? Underneath? How can I find if I even have a spot for another DIMM? If anyone has any info for the new guy, I'd be grateful!

Found place!

Ok, I put the new memory in, but the computer only sees 512! As though I didn't add any. The weird thing was that the package stated 512, but the actual module listed on one side 256.. Did I get ripped off, or is it like double sided? Even if the PC had 2 pieces of 256, I should at least have 768, right? Thanks!

whatever is in the slots

According to Acer's documentation, the C110 has two slots, each capable of holding up to 1GB, for a total of 2GB RAM for the system. The type of RAM should be a PC2100 (DDR266) SODIMM.

Whatever RAM is in the slots is what you get.
Example: Slot1 (256MB) + Slot2 (256MB) = 512MB (not 768MB)

Hmm.. Confused

Ok, the computer has two slots, one in the back and one in the keyboard. The keyboard one is NOT meant to user upgradeable. Assuming then that both slots each have a 256 chip inside equaling 512, the original amount. OK, I put in a 512 Chip instead of a the 256 in the back. So: I have one 256 chip inside the keyboard, and a 512 chip in the back. that should equal 768, right? The weird thing is that it only shows 512... Does that mean that the new chip I put in, supposedly a 512, really a 256?
Thanks

Upgrade memory under keyboard: Instructions

If I were to take a guess, you were sent a 512MB upgrade kit (two 256MB memory modules) instead of one 512MB module. Run Belarc Advisor to tell you precisely how much memory is in each slot.

Check your receipt or package invoice and also check the memory packaging. Does the item description say something like ''512MB kit'' or ''dual channel kit'' or ''2 x 256MB'', etc.?

If you got the ''2 x 256MB'' kit, call the company from which you ordered it and tell them that they sent you the wrong item. Ask for a RMA (return merchandise authorization) so they will pay for the return shipping and refund your money. Or have them send the 512MB module and refund the difference in price.
