New Macbook Pros

Sep 26, 2007 5:42AM PDT

I'm itching to purchase a new macbook pro when Leopard finally comes out, however, all this recent speculation has got me worried that there will be an improved system out sometime between now and somewhen soon.
Does anybody have any idea as to whether this is likely?

The last thing I want is for my new MBP to become out-of-date to a newer model within at least 6 months I'd say.
And, no surprise, the people at the Southampton Apple Store were of no help Happy
Can't blame them though.

I see more liklihood in the macbook line being updated, since their overhaul was minor and the colour scheme is now moving towards the brushed aluminium look, however I'm not quite so worried about this, because I don't reckon they'll be at the same specs as the pro's..

Will they?

Oh gosh, someone save me.

Yes.

It's written on the wall that all Apple products will move to LED backlighting. So any without that is still on CCFL will see an update.

NO! Apple does not tell us when.

Yes, that new OS rollout is pretty well known and when many may make their decision.

Am I right in thinking

That the MBP was moved over to LED a while back?

Right

Realistically, how long's the Macbook pro going to last before being overdone, next summer? I could live with that.

Again, Apple doesn't share such.

The one with CCFL is definitely on the hit list. Remember you have to use the (Mac) rumor sites since Apple doesn't issue such dates.

Yeah, I agree with you there

One very nice and refined product. If you can hang in there for the MacOSX update I think anyone that pulls the trigger could be happy for many years. However the lesson is that companies must innovate, move, improve or die. I know you'd like it to be more like the car makers but I think they are in deep trouble.

Indeed so

I wouldn't mind the macbook keyboard on the pro.. The concave keys just don't cut it for me, not with the streamlined aesthetics of the system.

That's an easy bet.

Given the recent facelift on the MBP I bet the keyboard will remain as is. My fix? I have an external KBD.

No - still has similar issues to the first-gens.

I'm on a few weeks old Santa Rosa Macbook Pro at the moment, and it has exactly the same core issues as my first Macbook Pro back in April or May '06 had.

Heat, slight build variations (very noticeable on a design like the Macbook Pro), functional issues and a new problem - yellowing on the display. The specs have been refined for sure, but the problems that affect usability in comparison to other top-tier quality notebooks have not.

MacBook Pro Status

You did not say how you intended to use the MacBook. Here is a perspective from someone who purchases computers for our business:

Both the 15" and the 17" models have recently been refreshed. The 17" dose not yet have the LED backlight and that feature is widely anticipated - but it really is not very important except as it affects battery life and screen image - both of which are already excellent.

I would wait for the release of 10.5 and then purchase. That is what we plan to do for our business.

Macs have great life expectancy and resale value so having the latest and greatest is not as much of a concern in the Mac World as it is in the Windows World. That is from a value perspective. Cannot speak to bragging rights - that is a personal matter.

From a business perspective, we always buy Macs at the high end for our needs and Windows boxes as the low end. We hold onto the Macs and junk the Windows boxes when they reach the end of their useful economic life. btw - we have a couple of PowerBook Pismos around to access some legacy software and hardware. They also work fine as print servers and for occasional access to the internet. We will sell those on eBay once all those archived files are retrieved, translated to a newer file format re-archived on to more modern media.

I hope this helps.

I've been using Windows all my life Love
I'd never thought of it that way but it's true, having the latest machine really is important running Windows.
I'm really looking forward to this
(I even looked up photos of the packaging and it's seriously nice)
Plain I can't believe I said that.
When I bought my last Windows Laptop it came in a brown corrugated cardboard box with more bits of polystyrene than one could shake a stick at.
I'm praying rumours of October the 5th for 10.5 (See the link?) are true.
