Not at this time. It is subject to change at some point in the future, so it would pay to be somewhat vigilant, but at present that threat has largely failed to materialize. The closest the Mac world has had to any kind of major virus or malware outbreak was the various Mac Defender variants, which appear to have died off somewhat. And those were just trying to sell you some completely useless software, they weren't doing anything particularly malicious.
Of course if you install Windows via Boot Camp or VMWare/Parallels, then you'll need to install all those programs on the Windows side of things sames as you always would. Just because you're running Windows on a Mac doesn't somehow exempt you from the usual problems of Windows.
I like to think of it as sitting on a tropical beach where the sun is shining, the weather is perfect, but way off in the distance you can see some storm clouds. So far those storm clouds seem to be rather slow moving. We don't know if it'll be tomorrow or 10 years from now before they reach us, just that it will happen one day. May as well live it up on the beach while we still can, but at the same time recognize the looming threat and be prepared for the day it finally does arrive.
I just got a new MacBook Pro.
Please forgive my ignorance but I'm coming from Windows.
Is it necessary to install virus and spyware protection on Mac?
Thanking you ahead in this matter,
