New Home Video Advice

Feb 22, 2006 6:36AM PST

I am the process of redoing my home theather system. I have a Panasonic LCD projection TV with a DVI input. A few options that I was looking at was:

1. Purchase a OPPO Digital DVD player because of the DVI output and good rating from CNET.

or

2. Have my computer with DVD player and connect the DVI output of my graphics card to the TV DVI.

My big concern is option 2. Can a computer DVD player match a stand alone DVD Player? Does it matter that a computer DVD player doesn't do 3-2 pulldown or does it? Is play back dependent on the software that is used? Pros and Cons would be good.

Can a computer DVD player match a stand alone DVD Player?

Yes, PC DVD watching is excelent!! Only the BIG $$$$$ DVD players can equal a good PC/software DVD combo.
PC softwre will de-interlace and up scan the video to the resoultion that your PC is set. If you Pc is set 1024x768
then that's how you view the DVD movie.
A friend of mine uses him Mac Mini to watch DVDs on his HDTV.
3-2 pulldown,,,,Hmmm,,, for over 50 years I have been watching movies on TV/video and never found that extra frame added every fourth frame to be such a big deal. But now it's a big deal. Movies are 24fps, video is 30fps so every 4 movie frame is scanned twice. Now we have to take it out, Oh Well. John

The Oppo is great, but you HAVE to use the DVI output.
