General discussion

new home theatre system

Mar 24, 2006 3:35AM PST

I am having my basement finished and I am trying to map come pu with a good h.t. system. I have already mapped out where I am going to place furniture and have decided to go with either a 42 or 50 inch plasma. Now I have to find a good surround sound system. Since my ceiling is open now I can wire for the system with out any hassle. One thing I was considering was in ceiling speakers, but I am not sure. Any advice? Also keep in mind I have low ceiling and no post so there are not many options to mount speakers to.

I know there are stick on rubber moldings that will hide your speaker wire, And speakers that come with nice looking stands. The work is well worth it and 7.1. is the way to go. I just installed a 7.1. Atlantic Technology 4200 system in my home. and the sound is beyond belief. + 7.1. you get 360 degrees of sound that will really put you in the movie your going to love it good luck stewart dont forget the snack bar

basement h.t. system

what I would really like to find would be a 7.1 system in which the the 2 rear & 2 side speakers can be in ceiling speakers. That way I can avoid having my kids knock over the standing ones. Do you know of any that are like that?

I SEE YOUR POINT

Check out a hi-end home theater dealer. only problem you would have to cut out the wall to install this type of speaker, They usually are speakers in a inclosure that fits in the wall with a cover over them and I have no idea what they sound like. My Atlantic Technology speakers are on stands with a large base and even if your young ones knocked them over I dont think that would damage them. How about just screwing the base into the floor with some sort of clamp let us know how it turnes out stewart good luck

He was trying to compliment you on your Atlantic Technology 7.1 speaker system that is beyond belief (actually it is really a 5.1 system with two mis-matched Cerwin Vegas throw in, but I won't tell anyone).

7.1 in ceiling rears
Mar 24, 2006 9:59AM PST

You can do this with in ceiling speakers, lots of information out there about placement.
Depending on your budget, and the receiver you plan on using, there are good quality in wall or ceiling speakers from a variety of brands. You should expect to pay around 100.00 per speaker at a minimum, with better quality models hitting 500 - 800 pair, and if your looking for the upper level, well the sky's the limit here.
Something to concider, if there is a back wall behind the seating area (8 - 10ft away) you could put surrounds in wall there, and use in ceiling just behind and to either side of the main listening area for side speakers.
