New here and need purchasing advice

Hi. I am having trouble deciding on a digital camera to buy. I am not very saavy and would be using auto mode most of the time.

I am looking for a camera that can take great photos as well as capturing my dogs and 7 month old daughter moving constantly (so basically action shots as well.) I am looking to spend under $500.

I have been told to purchase the Kodak easyshare z712IS, the Canon SD890IS, or and the Canon s5IS. Do you have any advice? Thanks so much.

The Canon S5IS will probably be a better investment than the Kodak Z712IS.

The Canon SD890IS has a pretty good zoom for an ultra compact camera, but it does not offer you much room for growth in photography.
It does not have the manual controls of the other two cameras.

While you are looking.
Look at the Canon G9. It is Canon's Premium non-DSLR camera and is at the top end of your budget.
A less expensive version would be the Canon A720IS.
Both have the important manual controls
..Shutter Priority
..Aperture Priority
..Program AE
..Full Manual

Canon G9 or Panasonic FZ18

In reply to: New here and need purchasing advice

The canon is a great option for a full body non-slr, but it will cost you right around that $500. If you want to save some cash and still get a great camera I would look at the Panasonic FZ18. It has 18x optical zoom, 8.1 mp sensor, all glass leica lens, and a very good intelligent auto mode. If you are looking at a camera for mostly auto-mode photos, the advanced manual options of the canon G9 might be overkill, but I'm sure it has a good auto mode as well. The G9 does have a larger screen and a hotshoe for a flash, but the Panasonic is $140 cheaper and includes a lens hood in the box. Don't forget to budget in the price of accessories such as sd card and case. Here is a link for the memory card and camera I recommend from amazon, as well as the g9. Hope this helps.

PS. stay away from kodak, they are generally lower quality cameras at nearly the same price as the canons/panasonics.
