General discussion

new HDTV--Panasonic or pioneer

Sep 30, 2008 1:27AM PDT

Have been researching this for a year now (actually lost interest for a while) and need to make a decision.

Would love a 52" but can't find one. So is bigger or smaller the smart choice--have a good size room. Am down to Panasonic and Pioneer. Of the Panasonics, I am confused about the different models... What is the difference? lots of numbers and letters that mean nothing to me. Even the Panasonic web site was unhelpful in deciphering.

Pioneer v Panasonic

If you can afford it, the Pioneer PDP5020 is the best.
However, only by a "hair" over the Panasonic 50PZ800. The PZ800, when set to THX mode, has the most accurate color and deep black levels (almost as deep as the Pioneer). The Panasonic is the BEST VALUE, because it can be found for as much as $1,000 LESS than the Pioneer.

Cnet just posted a review of the same PZ800 in the jumbo 58" size. It not only got hte same great review, but they said the black levels were even DEEPER THAN THE 50" version! And, you can find the 58" version fro the same or less than a Pioneer 50.

I have a Sony 42 " TV. It is OK. my disapointment comes from NOT seeing the picture in the full size of the screen as the native picture. The broadcasters and the TV mfgr's should get together.
I had a 36 " tube set, and a lot of the broadcasted pictures on my LCD/HDTV are about the same size or smaller. Sure, I can expand the picture with the TV control but I lose some of the outer edges of the picture . So don't believe what you see in the "on display " in the stores !

Only on Standard Def channels

All High Def channels "natively" display at 16:9.

Old analog broadcasts & most CABLE news channels are still 4:3 (like your old TV)

Best solution: Turbo HD (from Dish Network) were ALL your stations are in HD
