General discussion

new hdd wont work.

Jun 2, 2007 6:50AM PDT

I have a Compaq presario 7598 with a bad HDD (clicks)purchase a hardrive that had the same model number n256, so i figured i could just re-install what ever operating system i wanted onto it, but when i plug in the new HDD the pc says cannot detect operating system, which is assumed, but the pc wont recognize the xp disc, do i need to enter a special key combo. How do i fix this, do i need to initialize/format the new HDD for it to work? Or should i just buy an external HDD and load the os onto that with my newer pc then plug it into my older one? Would that work??

You need to enter the BIOS
Jun 2, 2007 7:31AM PDT

and set it to boot the CD/ROM drive as first boot, After powering on start tapping the F10 or Delete key and then you will have to navigate around in the BIOS to find and change the boot order (Save It also.)

Other things to consider, If you are trying to reinstall the OS from a Factory restore disk it may not work with a new drive. You will need MOBO drivers and all other drivers for such as printer, scanner, camera ETC.

Did you fdisk and format?

You have to fdisk and format the new drive before you can install the os

If It's A SATA Drive...Did You...?
Jun 2, 2007 9:38AM PDT

...install the SATA drivers? And in some cases, you need to access the BIOS and disable the "Native SATA Support" (IF it's there) before the XP disc will be recognized. Once "Native SATA Support" is disabled and the XP disc is recognized, then you can proceed from there.

And as mentioned by others, also in the BIOS settings, make sure the boot order is set to run the CD/DVD drive FIRST.

Hope this helps.
