New HD not appearing on desktop.

Jan 12, 2006 12:16PM PST

I've just installed a new Seagate 300GB sata drive in my DP 2GHz G5. (running 10.4.4). It's recognized by Disk Utility (and by the System Profiler), but I can't figure out how to format or mount it. With the new drive highlighted in Disk Utility the 'Mount' button isn't available - in fact the only options available are the 'info' button and the create new disk image button. Am I missing something really obvious?

I'd sure appreciate any advice! Thanks

You need

to initialize the drive, kinda like formatting, to allow it to mount on the desktop.
In DIsk Utility, select the drive, select the Partition Tab, select 1 Partition from the drop down menu that is over the "picture" of the drive. Drop down says "current" initially.
Give the drive a name and click on the Partition button at the bottom.
And Voila, as if by magic, the drive is initialized, and appears on the desktop. The Mount button will do nothing for a drive that has not been initialized.

Hope this helps
