New harddrive, now no defrag

Dec 2, 2004 5:42AM PST

I have an HP pavilion that is about 6 years old. It came with a 10GB hard drive that recently did a belly flop. I bought an 80GB harddrive and had it installed and everything works great until I tried using defrag. It will run for a couple of minutes and then start over. Any ideas. Also can someone recommend a good tutorial for partitioning my hard drive. Win 98se IE 6sp1 256mb of ram. Thanks alot, John

You need to turn everything off to defrag on a Win98 system.

EG Anti-virus programs, disable any firewall, (but disconnect from the internet first), and more importantly, disable the screensaver.

With Windows 98, you need to either stop all programs running in the background or do your defrag in the safe mode.
