You did not mention any drive preparation such as partitioning and formatting the drive. Because it shows in device manager, it sounds as if it's been detected. It will not show in My Computer unless it's been assigned a drive letter. Drive letters for HDs require a valid partition first. If you are using XP, the partition/format process is done through disk management found in the control panels administrative functions. Has this been attempted?
I recently bought a third hard drive for my XP SP2 system. I intended to use it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure. When I did that, a "USB Mass Storage Device" was detected, but would not install properly and could not be used. Same results when I plugged the USB enclosure into my laptop.
I then tried to try the new hard drive inside my machine. It is an ATA 133, just like my other two drives. When I installed it internally, the device still did not work properly. It does appear in the Device Manager, but not in My Computer and right-clicking a file does not give the option to send to the new drive. I am certain that I have the jumper set properly to the "slave" position. There was no installation disk for the the drive, and I don't really think I should need one- never have needed one for other drives.
An additional note: I witnessed the FedEx guy drop the box from waist height when he was giving it to me...could this have something to do with it? Should I return it? Thanks
