new hard drive not shown in disc management

by sudongyue / June 16, 2009 4:35 AM PDT

I really need some help!!

Got a new hard drive, put it in an external case, connect to my PC through USB. It did not show up in My Computer of course coz it has not been formated yet. So I went to computer management and although the new hard drive shows up in device management and the property says it is working properly, it does not show up in the disc management. So I cannot format it. What can I do?

Could it be my external case? I got it brand new lately. It is called NexStar CX, pretty cheap, cost me $30. and it has one USB port and a power button at the back and that's all it has. No other switches.

Thanks in advance!!

Leave the drive connected and download the disk diagnosic

software from the manufacturer's site. Run the software to make sure the drive is OK and it will be detected. Most of them ship the software with a new hard drive unless it is a OEM (bare) drive. and most of them will offer to format the drive from the software. After that is done, you should be OK.

thanks, problem remains

Thanks. I went to Seagate website and it says windows should install the driver automatically, no need for extra software for that. My windows is vista 32. I cannot find any testing software on their website... and there is no troubleshooting regarding my problem in their website neither.

The property says that my device is working properly, and the driver is fine too. but i just cannot format it.

By the way, I got the hard drive this morning from the manufacturer. It reached me through UPS. It is an warranty exchanged item because my previous seagate drive died within warranty. No reason to believe that it is another defective products, right? If so, i am really unlucky...:(

looks like it is working now

Hi, it seems to be working now. I just reboot my computer and it shows up at disk management!!!

This is weird, coz when I first plug it in and finished automatic installation, I rebooted my computer but it did not show up. and i tried it out in another computer and it did not work either, how come this time it works? what is the difference between first reboot and second reboot?

Now i am formatting it and it goes extremely slowly. Looks like it takes 10-20 minutes to go up 1%. Is it a sign of a problem or it is just fine? It is an 500G drive.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
