Question

New GPU and PC reboots every time I start a game

Aug 11, 2017 10:51PM PDT

I just got a new GPU: [MSI GeForce GTX 1050][1] replacing my old card
[ASUS GeForce 9500 GT][2]

I got it to play planet coaster. It was working fine initially, until the next day I noticed as I was playing the screen went black. My monitor stated no signal. My monitor is [VIZIO SmartCast™
E-Series 43" 4k version][3]. The music from my PC was still playing. So I started restarted my PC by pressing the hard reset button. The PC booted back up like normal.

The next day the same thing happened, but now I noticed if I tried to start the game or any game. My PC reboots itself. I have already checked and I have the latest drivers installed for my GPU. My bios also only update from the current bios version and from the description in only has changes regarding optimizing HDD so not sure if it going to do anything if I update the bios. (usually very reluctant to updating bios because from experience it can cause more problems than fixing). Would any one know what could be causing it?

This is the rest of my specs:
[Intel Core i7-870 Lynnfield Quad-Core 2.93 GHz CPU][4]
[ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Motherboard][5]
[Western Digital Black WD1001FALS 1TB HDD][6]
[Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner][7]
[CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750W PSU][Cool
[Rosewill CRUISER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Case ][9]

I cant seem to find name of brand or link of the ram I have but it's 16gb

I did ran prim95, and nothing happened. no crash
I also ran Furmark, the moment it launched my PC rebooted.

Please help. not sure what is causing this problem

Nothing wrong with the monitor

Could be a heat related situation. Do you keep an eye on CPU and GPU temperature by any means?

Cpu is 40c and system is 27c. You is 25c that without any gaming. I can't tell what happen during as my system reboots so quick I don't have chance to look at the temps

Yes, my cpu usually around 80c and gpu 34c

70 C is cutoff in some BIOS

Check what the shutoff temp setting in your BIOS is for the CPU.

Is the cpu temp 40c or 80c?

Based on the age of that cpu when's the last time you cleaned the cpu fan and heatsink?

40c

Sorry for the confusion it's 40c. I cleaned the fan as much I could couple months ago when I applied new thermal paste on cpu.

I don't see the old drivers from my old card in device manager. Just the new one under display.

I can try running furmark on the old card. See if the same thing happens.

I checked the website already. Running the latest driver. The only one current is a beta version so probably not the most stable to install.

You may not see old drivers.
Aug 12, 2017 11:12AM PDT

And need the tool I noted to be sure they are gone. My thoughts here are to try things that could help to either sniff out what it could be (change to old card), things I've seen (display driver uninstaller) and then use that information to see what next.

As it stands the Furmark reboot only tells me the machine (this includes all things such as hardware, OS, drivers and apps) has a problem. It doesn't tell me where yet.

Think I found it
Aug 12, 2017 11:20AM PDT

I pugged in the old card. Looked at device manager and under display there it was listed without an error meaning the driver is still installed. I would have expected when the new drivers are installed it will uninstall the old ones guess not.

I ended up uninstalling the old card drive, plugging back the new card and updated driver. Seems to work.

I ran furmark and no crash while it's still running. It's more than half way in the run.

I did notice my cpu temp went from 40c to 74c and gpu went from 34c to 62c when my pc is under stress like running a game.

Wanted to ask if that is normal temp range?

Take the side panel off and see if the temps drop.

Looks like you fixed it.
Aug 12, 2017 12:25PM PDT

Up top you claim it rebooted on launch of games and tests. Now it does not.

The heat should increase under load so that's fine too. While the temps are getting warm they are not over the part specifications from memory.

Thanks everyone, now i have to figure out 4k issue
Aug 12, 2017 12:42PM PDT

If you have a solution please let me know, if not thanks for the help. this was a bigger issue than not having my pc display 4k.

I know the new card can run 4k and my display is a 4k tv.

When I try to change the screen resolution to the recommended setting 3840 X 2160 and press apply okay. It states the resolution is 3840 X 2160, but when I go back to my screen resolution setting I see my resolution is back to 1920 x 1080.

I also went to Nvidia Control Panel and try to change the resolution to 4k x 2k, 3840 x 2160 (native) the screen goes black and reappears and res. setting is still 1080p, 1920 x 1080

Not sure why I can't seem to make my computer to display in 4k.

I was told it's because I'm using HDMI cable. not sure how that is the problem since 4k tv already uses HDMI for 4k.

4k tv & not monitor
Aug 12, 2017 3:20PM PDT

The link is not accurate, it's a 4k tv, could it be the reason why. That I am using a 4k tv and not monitor. I read on TechRadar that people do this all the time to play games in 4k from pc to tv monitor hooked up to say their living room tv.

Just looked the the box. Same model and states it 4k ultra hd. I can post a pic if I figure out how to.

To get to 4K UHD
Aug 13, 2017 1:05PM PDT

Not only do you need the right display but HDMI 2.0 unless you are OK with 30Hz on the display.

Why not help us here with that picture or better yet the link to the model you have?

But my advice is to stand at 1080 to the TV because the 1050 isn't enough for 4K UHD gameplay. I see no need to vet this answer.

Just so you know
Aug 14, 2017 9:28AM PDT

Without the BIOS being up to date and the mix of hardware I bet you may have issues getting this working from scratch.

If the maker can't deliver a working system, maybe it's time to move to a more mundane setup of a PC monitor, current BIOS and such?

Guess I have no choice, but to update bios
Aug 14, 2017 9:38AM PDT

Just accept the fact my motherboard is just too outdated for all that stuff.

Probably wait till I make a new rig in a year. Going all out with Vega and Ryzen.

Could also be the reason why I am having the same issue with the screen going black after Windows 10 install on SSD. Like it was on Windows 7.
Can't seem to get to sign up page before the screen goes black, PC still on tho.

Look on the back of the monitor for a label.

Aug 14, 2017 9:51AM PDT

It's a HDTV 4K UHD but they left off the all important letter U from the model number.

HOWEVER that doesn't mean this setup will work. There are many folk griping about this and my thought is it's a bit bleeding edge on some setups. The BIOS out of date and possible TV firmware or settings mean this is an expert level setup problem. I've shared I'd update both PC and TV firmware to help give it the best chance of working.
