New generation modems and routers

Feb 25, 2007 12:35PM PST

My Internet service provider (a cable company) wants to give ALL its subscriber a new modem that it claims will give better performance to the customers. The details of what makes it better are far from clear and very general in nature.

Since the cost to the company of changing the modems must be in the millions of dollars I am suspicious of its motives.

I suspect that its real objective is to prevent subscribers from using routers so as to to have more than one connection using one account.

Am I overly cautious? Is it possible to prevent the use of routers (or detect the use of routers) so as to compel a subscriber to "buy" an additional IP address as the company is telling the subscribers to do to get more than one connection from home?

Any assistance would be be appreciated.
