new external harddrive problems

Mar 8, 2007 7:44AM PST

Hello,
I bought a new external harddrive for my windows xp. Whenever I plug it in it says device has malfunctioned and it cannot be recognized. I'm running xp and there are no files on the disc that have to do with xp, even tho it says xp. can anyone help me understand how to get this working? I'm gonna try using the disk that it came with but alot of people tell me you don't need your disk for this.
Thank you
Someone in desperate need of help
