It may sound like a basic question, but it's the most commonly overlooked step when installing a new hard drive. Windows cannot 'see' the drive until it's been formatted, so use your Windows CD, the software from Western Digital (Data Lifeguard), Disk management, etc to format it in either FAT or, if you're using it on 2000/XP systems, NTFS.
If it has already been formatted, Windows may be detecting the hard drive but the drive may be hidden in My Computer. In that case you can use Microsoft's TweakUI to unhide the drive so it's easily used.
Hope this helps,
Hello, I've been following fellow threads for some time now and i haven't come across an answer.
Right now, I'am using my parents 4 yr old Dell 4200 P4 at 2.6 with 512. It has a 80(74.4) gig hard drive. I purchased an OEM Western Digital 250gig(234) hard drive with SATA at 3.0gbs. This hard drive was to be originally for the PC i'am building now.
I decided to turn the before mentioned internal hard drive into an external hard drive using an I- Rocks 3.5'' SATA HDD Enclosure. I've had the enclosure for roughly several hours now, and it runs the hard drive fine, i can hear the disk spining and it heats up. The physical drive however as most people have posted is not showing anywhere under My Computer.
The places i have seen it are as follows:
testdisk_win.exe, i used the program along with a tutorial to see if there was any need to 'write' the drive properly. i recieved no errors that the hard drive was damaged but, before i used the analyze function, it specified 'No Bootable Partition'
Under Computer Manager. When the drive is on, i can click and see the piece of hardware on the tree from the 'disk drives' tab.
Safely Remove Hardware. Obviously enough, this pops up and stays in my lower right hand task bar for the time being that the drive stays on. while investagating, it gives me the stats of the physical hard drive in the enclosure.
So far i have run testdisk and fully checked TWEAK Gui. all of with the exception of test disk gave me no indication of a problem with the hard drive, or fixed my problem of recovering it as an external piece of hard ware. i have emailed i-rocks technical support but is there any more that i can do to solve my problem, and use my external enclosure?
