New dVDs "Widescreen"

Jan 19, 2005 4:21AM PST

Sony KDF-55XS955- Sony progressive DVD player. Just started using DVDs more. I still have a large widescreen picture but with the black bars on top. Did put it in the wide Zoom mode but didn'y care for it. I assume the black bars are normal for now. Are They?? Have DVD player set to 16.9 progressive. Will newer DVDs be widescreen format or is this going to continue to happen.

There are so many variations and aspec ratios in widescreen that you will probably have bars on them for some time. Try looking for DVD's that say "enhanced" for 16x9 tv's. This will eliminate bars. Also, Widescreen Review is a great source for reference to movies.

Aspect Ratios

I have the Mits 52327, and have the same problem...and I use the word loosely. And what I found out when looking at the back of the DVD case, is that my TV displays a FULL widescreen picture with the aspect ratio of 2:40:1. Anything lesser then that (i.e. 1:80:1) would have the bars on the top and bottom. No matter if the box says that it is enhanced for widescreen, I think (I'm at work). Changing the picture size on the TV to fill the screen would cut-off edges or distort depending.
I don't know what the numbers mean, so don't ask me. But I would like some1 else to help with this if they can.

DOH, Sorry. I tried my assumption when I got home, and still got the black bars with my Master & Commander DVD (2:40:1 anamorphic) and my Black Hawk Down - Superbit (Buy this DVD, has Great Picture/Sound).
