Question

New Dell XPS 17 laptop GPU temp OK?

Mar 22, 2012 3:22PM PDT

Just received my new Dell XPS 17 laptop yesterday and today I installed the Nvidia GPU Meter gadget for windows 7. the temp keeps reading anywhere from 127-140 degrees. Is this normal?

The laptop does have Optimus so it switches between integrated and discrete graphics. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem.

Also the fan is constantly turning on and off in short bursts.

Here is my system info:

OPERATING SYSTEM:
Windows 2.6.1.7601 (Service Pack 1)

CPU TYPE:
Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz

SYSTEM MEMORY:
8 GB DDR3

VIDEO CARD MODEL:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 3gb DDR3

HARD DISK SIZE:
679 GB

Seems ok.

But NEVER compare it to desktops where we can fit better cooling. And as it is a laptop, gaming is treacherous as laptops usually last a few years and then we repair them. Hope this was not for gaming.

Answer
XPS 17 Temperatures.

Your temperatures must be in degrees Fahrenheit, as the laptop woul have shut down way before 140°C was reached. A temp of 140°F (60°C) is fine and no problem.
