Question

New dell vostro 1720 battery not charging

Oct 1, 2011 12:01PM PDT

I replaced an old 6cell dell vostro battery with a new 8 cell replacement, and the laptop ran fine with it, the AC is not charging it. The LED battery indicator only briefly came on, at start up, and then went out.

Could be proper.

Do you remember the news a few years ago about battery fires? Dell among other makers reacted by locking out third part batteries. If the battery is from Dell, call them and ask if they have a fix.

Third Party Battery

Yes, it is a third party battery, but Dell's site is not phone number friendly, and being beyond warranty, support might be costly. Before buying, I read several reviews of people using it in the same computer with no problems reported. I've read that updating the BIOS might be a solution, but hesitate to try that as the local computer guys tell me that I could do system damage if the power were to be interrupted during the process. I seem to remember having to program my son's laptop to recognize his battery when we set it up, but our local computer shop set this one up. I may have to give in and let them figure this one out.

It's why I can't reccomend third party batteries today.

If they don't work, the cost to make them work wipes out the savings.
