Resolved Question

New Dell GX280 motherboard (GX280) does not recognize hard d

Jul 23, 2012 6:28AM PDT

Just installed dell gx280 MB into gx280 using existing parts from my old gx280 including hard drive. The system starts boot up but does not recognize the HD or the DVD drives. System utilities shows no drives. I am lost here.

I replaced because I had had no problems with the Dell, but had not used it for three days and then it gave me "no signal" message when I tried to boot it up. I replaced the video card with brand new one with no luck. Still "no signal" It had worked fine until this. I had all green diagnostic lights except the top one was yellow. Using my other PC for the info, I went through the steps for Dell diagnostics and finally ended up with "other problem" as the diagnosis.

Again, this was a gx280 mb replacing a gx280 mb.

You get more help with more details. I can't guess the connections of the drives in question, if the power was connected and the drive jumpers set.

Then again the model you noted is now beyond the usual end of life. That is, many are dead. Isn't booting up good enough? I define booting up as all the way to Windows.

GX280 MOTHERBOARD
Jul 24, 2012 3:57AM PDT

Sorry, I just bought the motherboard I installed as refurbished and tested; I am running XP. Before both the DVD and HD worked fine in my computer until the morning I got the "no signal" message and could not boot up.With the "new" one it has power but will not boot to windows because it finds no bootable drives. I know these are old PCs but I am trying to learn.

A service counter may be best. In a way I asked for details about connections, jumpers and more but looking at the reply I find only that the machine didn't boot at all but managed to show some BIOS messages.

Try setting the BIOS to its defaults.

Should have worked

I fix business and corporate Dells often with replacement mtrbds.. If yours doesn't work with new one, then that is bad mtrbd,.. replacing all the components, etc., with no change other than mtrbd., it should take off. You have to be sure all connections and jumpers, etc. are the same from old to new mtrbd., and then power it up. Recheck your work and isfall is OK, and still no workee, then return the mtrbd.. Recheck those cables, be sure you didn't bent a pin, etc..
