New Computer so much stuff

by michhala / January 7, 2011 5:41 PM PST

I have my new Dell XPS 8100 64-bit up and running. There will be much that I will eventually be eliminating. Here is the first to go -- I have Java 6 Update 21 (64 bit) and Java 6 Update 23. Normally I would uninstall the lower version and keep the newer, but the newer does not mention 64-bit......so I am hesitant to remove the older update which specifies 64-bit before checking it out.

Great site and good info

My IE ver 8.0.7600.16385 has cipher strength of 256 bit -- by any chance would that be 32 or 64 bit? IE About does not mention 32 or 64 bit. According to the referenced Java site, many IE are 32 bit on 64 bit machines, and one needs to know which they have before downloading......Miki

...I went to Java website to download for 64-bit cuz that is what it told me to do if I had IE 64-bit, and received this message:

"We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 32-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers."

Since I have one of each installed, I have come full circle. I have no idea if I will be using 32-bit and 64-bit interchangeably....have been working this new computer less that 24 hrs.

Methinks I'll rest my bloodshot eyes a bit and install 41 Windows Updates, after which I will attempt to uninstall unnecessary programs in Add/Remove, msconfig, and the systems tray....

One more thing....

Thanks to Bob Proffitt, I found the Java Console on Windows 7. My version there is Java 6 Update 21. To summarize, Programs menu lists IE as 64 bit; Control Panel Uninstall/Change lists Java 6 Update 21 (64 bit) and Java 6 Update 23 (which is probaably 32 bit).

Does this mean I will need to download and keep two update versions on my computer?

Thanks everyone for your patience with my hysteria :)......miki
