Question

New computer help

Jan 30, 2015 7:30PM PST

I have a Asus x99a motherboard and I cannot get the sata to work. It had detected my drives only twice and I have no idea why. It detects my usb stuff but not sata. I don't have a DVD sata to use since mine is broke so I use a usb DVD. I updated the bios to the newest and still nothing. I have 3 drives it detected 2 of them. Yes I tried using different cables and ports.

Doesn't detect it when trying to install Windows or in bios.

I don't see modes.

"Yes I tried using different cables and ports."

I can't seem to locate a manual to share images from the BIOS screens. I know folk are not in touch with bios today but cables and ports are not sata modes.

Well by some maracile I was able to get the main drive working and installed Windows but the other two I cannot. No matter what I do Even put it in the same slot the working drive was in

Since you are not writing back about modes.

I'm guessing this is your first rodeo. It's rare but some drives won't work with some boards. So you hunt around for sata mode reduction in the BIOS. I would be guessing your drives spin up at all but since you got one drive working I would be guessing you know there are two cables to connect per drive.

So we have on the table, SATA modes (this board does a few) and EFI.

If you could find a manual that matches your BIOS screens, I'll read it.

UEFI BIOS

Have you tried those drives with Secure Boot turned off? Tried "Legacy/CSM" mode? Made sure each drive was registered into the BIOS properly?

Ok just tried that and nothing but I started my computer up to try it and I saw the tb drive was detected in the bios but not available as a boot up drive. Do I let it go to Windows and it wasn't there. I restarted the computer into bios and it was gone.... What?

In these new EUFI Bios

because of Microsoft's requirement for Secure Boot, you have to turn that off and register each drive you want accessible into the BIOS and then turn the Secure Boot back on. During standard MBR there were mostly just two BIOS makers out there and all similar, but now there's a plethora of varying types of UEFI-BIOS, each maker doing his own thing within generic bounds outlined for use with Windows, and the variety makes it more difficult for users, UNLESS they read the manual on the new BIOS, and even that's no guarantee.

I've put off getting such a UEFI motherboard myself, since even windows 10 will run without such, but all the new motherboards are coming with it due to Microsoft influence. I want to wait till they get past the first generation of these and have become more standardized on the UEFI BIOS.

Answer
From the manual.

I was going to copy some text from the manual but the maker blocked that so it's clear that you need to get back to them.

I see where there are TWO SATA CONTROLLERS, a dozen configuration options and some would result in Windows not seeing the drives. I would help but the maker blocked me from copying text. Since this is all volunteer I won't re-type the passages in question.

Make the call or just get another board.

And somehow I got the tb ssd to work I just plugged it into different ports. But the regular drive won't. I used like 5 cores and plugged it into like every slot. But the tb works in like all the slots and different sata cords.

***? Once it registers it officially works all the time? What asinine sense does that make?

None at all.

While I did read a bit in the manual I hit full stop when I wanted to copy text from the manual to this forum. The PDF is copy protected for no good reason. Back to the maker IMO.
