Question

New computer contracted the ICE Virus on second use.

Jul 13, 2014 1:53AM PDT

I have a new (refurbed) desktop with windows 7 and on the second time of use, it was infected with the ICE Virus. I have tried and tried to follow the repair advice offered on line, but I cannot get any father than, after I turn it on, click f8 and get to the "safe mode", "command prompt window type" the computer always goes from there to my "login" window. What am I doing wrong? Most every advice tells me I need to get to a place where I can type in "rstrui.exe" which is system restore, but I cannot get there. How do I get to system restore and not keep going back to my login page?

My computer is skipping a prompt.

For some reason, my computer is skipping #3 . It goes straight to my login page. What am I missing? The page that I am suppose to enter "rstrui.exe" does not show up.

Any chance you have recovery media?

If you've not even had it long enough to accumulate any data, I'd start over. I'd also not go on line at all until some anti-virus software was installed. You can download free AV software from AVG, AVAST and more...your choice. Download from another PC and install that before going on line. Lastly, pick where you go on-line very carefully. What comes home on the bottom of one's shoes depends on whose yard they went walking.

Please Help
Jul 15, 2014 7:16AM PDT

Steven, I give up! I have tried and tried and with my limited knowledge of computers, I cannot figure out how to get rid of this darn virus. As I said before, I am a novice when it comes to computers and being 72 years old doesn't help anything either. I would like to ask you for step by step instructions on how to do the flash drive deal. I did not have one, so I went today and purchased one. I have clicked on many links only to get lost after the first couple of steps. As I mentioned before, I have nothing on this computer that I need to save, so starting over would be great and believe me I WILL watch where I step from now on.

Thanks Steven,
Bill

My suggestion was, if available, to use recovery media
Jul 15, 2014 7:44AM PDT

and start from scratch. This wouldn't involve a flash drive. A flash drive would be useful for saving personal files but not for rebuilding the OS. With the PC being refurbished, one has to wonder what might have come with it. We might also wonder how you identified the virus by name and what the symptoms were. Generally it's an antivirus program that detects and names the pests. More information about the system and where it came from would probably be helpful in finding the best solution. In any event, you should have or be able to make or obtain recovery media. You didn't mention where you got the PC but, if no recovery media was provided, you'd go there. If it's a brand name PC such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc., it should be possible to contact a manufacturer for the media that came with that model. There will be a cost but much less than buying an operating system. I can't offer more than that but if you can give more information about the PC including where it came from, brand and model, etc., a better answer should be forthcoming.

It's a Dell OptiPlex GX620 and I purchased it from Tech Deals Now a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher. It come with an Advanced Recovery icon, but I cannot get past the ICE Virus page to click on it.

I still want to know

How you determined your problem is related to a virus and the particular one you cited? If instead it's NOT a virus, but hardware problem interfering, then you have limited time, often only 30 days, to act on a warranty for a refurb. Did the place you bought it from tell you it was the ICE virus?

Not a doubt

The way I knew my problem is a virus is was, as I was on my computer a full screen appeared stating that my computer has been LOCKED by the FBI and Homeland Security and unless I went to one of the designated places and purchased a $300 money pack and sent it to a specific place in 48 hours, I would be investigated by the FBI and possibly prosecuted and jailed.

Steve Hanninger pretty much hit the best thing to do. Go to a clean computer, download and save to FD, Malwarebytes and the AVG free variant. Boot the sick unit into Safe Mode with networking, install MWB and AVG from the FD, run scans in Safe Mode with networking and see what happens. You said that this is a refurbished system so it is anyone's guess what may or may not be or have been in the system, at any rate these are a couple of things I would try for starters.
