Question

New computer can't see hard drives...

Mar 22, 2016 1:02PM PDT

I just built a new computer (ASUS Z170-A, Samsung M.2, XFX graphics, 16 GB mem) & it works fine except for one problem: Windows 10 won't see hard drives, either new or from another computer. BIOS sees them but Explorer won't. It seems like I've forgotten to install a driver but previous builds didn't require one. The M.2 drive (on the MB) works fine but I don't want to store documents on it.

What's going on, everybody???

A new drive won't show in File Explorer.

You need to partition and format new drives before they show.

Be sure to look in Device Manager and the partition tool too.

I have found that new drives are formatted @ the factory. Old drives should work; at least they always have. Maybe W 10 is different but I doubt it. Thanks.

Old drives "may" work.

It's a long standing issue about moving drives around. My fix? Boot up a Linux to copy the contents out so I can repartion and format in W10.

I think about your problem that, if you do not important work till now in your new computer, you can reset & restore your all drives & windows. I hope it's a easy way to solve your problem.
