New Computer

Feb 12, 2009 4:38AM PST

I need help picking a laptop! I work from home as a medical transcriptionist (need good wordprocessing) but also take my work with me when I have to travel. I also like to dabble in photo editing and printshop stuff. Can someone recommend something that has decent capabilities without breaking the bank?

what's your bank?
we can't not break your bank without knowing what we are trying not to break

most computers have no problems doing what you want

My bank is under $1000.00 I've used a Dell at a previous job and it was ok. Upon questioning a well known store, the salesperson said that HP were about the best for the price. Sony was good but you paid for the name. I currently have a compaq that is on it's way out and I've had problems with it as far as it's security system and it's very slow. I'm just looking for suggestions on any brands or models. I'm good with working with programs, but not all the tech stuff!

Laptops

Try to stay with the INTEL processor, Sony, Toshiba, HP, 3-4 GB ram. You should be able to find something for under 800 that would meet and exceed your requirements.

what to look for
Feb 13, 2009 4:37AM PST

*Intel Pentium DC/Core 2 Duo | AMD Turion UltraX2 (only for really cheap)
*3-4 gigabyte of RAM
*non-Intel graphics if you could possibly want to do ANY gaming whatsoever, even casual gaming
*good reviews

Avoid HP like the plague!

Unfortunately, I know of other people who have had similar problems with Hewlitt Packard. They are just a headache and they make customers feel pretty crummy about buying their stuff at all. To sum it up (and I truly am summing it up, because I dealt with much more than follows), I purchased my first laptop (HP Pavilion DV6626) on January 18th 2008. By May I started having issues like corruptions out of nowhere for no reason, optical drive issues (in the end, I had to replace it 5 times......), weird little glitches, inexplicable system shutdown, etc. It took til October for them to escalate my case to their case managers (where the really irritated customers go). They eventually had me send the whole thing in for a repair that was supposed to last 3-5 days and ended up lasting 3 weeks. They replaced the motherboard, hard drive, lcd screen, power board, 2 usb slots and my wireless adaptor, plus misc. cords and cables.. They sent it back and it was STILL MALFUNCTIONING!!! So... they said they'd build me a new one since they didn't even make the DVs anymore. Well, I got this really cool looking laptop, plugged it in, and it wouldn't even power on!!!! I called and got threatened with collections if I didn't return both immediately, to which I said no, I'd send back the new broken replacement and keep my original til I got a working replacement (my original could still do basic things and I needed it). They finally sent me a working replacement, (my original was basically broken for 9 months before HP honored their warranty) I've had it for three weeks and already I'm having issues, such as my optical drive opening out of nowhere for no reason, with no error and completely randomly. LOL! Even if you don't have any problems with an HP machine, their customer service is terrible. I will never buy another HP again, that's for sure. My roommate's dad just bought a really nice Dell for around $500, and I've heard really good things about the brand Acer. Either way, I feel it's an obligation to warn people from something that might end up way more of a headache than need be. Good luck computer hunting.

Take a good look at..

The new, not quite out 10 inch Acer Aspire Netbook. I own the 8.9 inch model and it surprisingly capable.

-> But I did add a Logitech V450 Nano mouse which I highly recommend for this machine.

Price? About 349 for the netbook and 49 for the mouse.
