What computer manufacturer & model name?
If you built it, what motherboard model name?
Maxtor hard drive model?
Install the latest chipset/motherboard drivers. Make sure you remove all unnecessary USB devices when installing.
Make sure you are using USB 2.0 and not 1.1 ports.
Try other USB ports, especially full powered rear ports.
Okay I just finished building a brand new computer, got windows XP up and running, did all updates, SP2, .NET Framework 2 etc, I plug in my External Hard Drive and Windows recognizes a USB Mass Storage Device but doesn't recognize a disk drive.
So far I've tried:
Went into Disk Management... It's not there,
Went into Tweak UI, all drives are checked,
I goto My Computer, right click C:/ and hit Properties, goto Hardware and my HDD is in there, It detects "Maxtor 6 Y200P0 USB Device" and says it is working properly. I go into it's properties, goto Volumes, hit Populate and it says unreadable.
I take the external HD to another computer in our hose, plug it in, turn it on, it works as it should. Bring it back to this new one.. Nothing yet again.
So I try one of my 3 USB drives, it detects the USB Mass Storage Device, detects a disk drive, I goto My Computer and open the disk drive to view my files on the USB drive and it says "Please insert disk into drive X:" ... It's detecting it as a disk drive.... ***?
Searching the net it seems like these problems are pretty common and I have yet to find a solution that works for me. Anyone have any ideas?
FORMATTING IS NOT AN OPTION! All my storage devices work on every computer other than this one, I am not formatting away 35 gigs of information that works on other computers.
