new cell phone

Aug 18, 2004 6:49AM PDT

I have verizon wireless, mainly because reception quality on my motorola v60i was much better than my brother's samsung sch-e105 on t-mobile. He can't even use it inside the living room, whereas it's perfectly fine for me. I want to get a new cell phone, as my 2-year agreement will be over soon. I am qualified for the new every two plan. So, I don't know how good Sprint PCS is. My friend's an employee at one of the dealers. Can anyone tell me how good Sprint PCS is, especially in New City, NY? Thanks

A lot of it depends on the phone a person has, as some phones on some services work better than other phones. Also it depends on how close a cell phone tower is to where you're located at. I have Verizon Wireless for 2 1/2 years and overall been happy with their service. I live near a 500ft tower and the signal penetrates my home with full strength bars on my phone. I however won't get Sprint the way people in my area have complained about lots of static on the service, and on the expensive phones, not the cheap phones. And that was my original choice for service. And I would have gone with Sprint had thery not made their plan for $35 a month only 200 anytime minutes (this was in March 2002) and Verizon Wireless having 300 anytime minutes for $35, then noticing Verizon Wireless having a larger coverage area, even for local service, which Sprint's local service is much smaller. I had to choose nationwide because one state isn't covered in the areas I travel to. To the original poster, if Verizon Wireless is doing fine for you, you might not want to get rid of Verizon Wireless without trying Sprint first, if you want to check them out. That way, if you don't like Sprint, you'll still have Verizon Wireless for service. A T-Mobile authorized agent at a local mall kiosk tried so hard to convince me that T-Mobile is better than Verizon, and tried to compare areas I don't travel, where I've done well with Verizon Wireless. I plan to get that representative pissed off a week from tomorrow when i plan to walk through that same mall just to show off my new phone from Verizon Wireless, since I'm available for an upgrade a week from tomorrow.

if you can, keep your a500 as long as you can! it was one of the last decent *phones* that sprint carried. my friend & brother both got the samsung i500 and had HORRIBLE luck with it because the touchscreens are very fragile. fortunately they both had insurance. my friend barely dropped his phone and the screen was completely trashed, so he got it replaced; my brother dropped and replaced his twice (screen similarly destroyed by minor fall), at which point sprint cancelled his insurance for a year, after which he slipped & fell when the phone was in his back pocket. so now he is stuck with a $600 phone with no functional screen (can't use any of the features, can't tell who's calling - he can dial directly or use speed-dial if he remembers the number).

after 4 years i'm also really happy with sprint except for their customer service (fortunately if nothing goes wrong you can avoid using it) and their STUPID PHONES. i want a flip phone with external lcd, analog roam, decent audio quality & battery life, vision, & no stupid camera (i.e., a phone from 2 years ago). i even decided i was willing to give up analog & vision, & put up with a camera, as long as i could have a PHONE with clear calls and an external lcd, but THAT doesn't even exist. as of a week ago my lg5300 (which i love) has a broken hinge so i'm on another anti-sprint rampage b/c i can't bring myself to buy any of their stupid, useless phones. i understand beefing up phones with useful things like PDAs (if only the manufacturers could do a better job at this) or bluetooth (sprint doesn't even attempt this), but CAMERAS? VIDEO PHONES? give me a break. we aren't all 12 years old.
