Question

New cable modem/router - now VOIP is spotty

Feb 29, 2016 11:46AM PST

Just got a new Netgear N450 cable modem/router. I use Vonage for my phone and ever since setting it up when I am on the phone people tell me that I am "going in and out".

How can I figure out if it's the N450 and not my basic cable service? It seems to be the only thing that requires a continuous signal.

Answer
As a test.

Turn off the firewall in the router. Retest. Next put the vonage into the DMZ entry and re-test.

Turning off firewall had no impact

Thanks for the response... I disabled the firewall and still had the same problem. Interestingly, I sent myself a long voicemail and it cut out twice in the first forty seconds for two to four seconds each.

About the DMZ, it looks like I need an ip address for the Vonage boxes and it seems that they don't take one some how! (Google "how to find the ip address of my vonage box" to see what I mean.

Next step is to re-install the old cable modem/router and see if I still have problems. At least that will isolate it to the new modem/router or not.

I would have to guess you used DHCP

So far, it looks good

Okay, the Vonage box was set for DHCP I just couldn't figure out which of the two dozen devices was assigned to which IP address. The bottom of the Vonage box had the MAC address and I was able to figure it out from there and did the DMZ setting.

I did one more one-minute voicemail to myself and there was no dropouts, so I am not declaring victory but so far so good.

A big THANK YOU to Mr/Ms Proffitt for the advice.

You dug in and tried it. Good going.

Nope, still problems

Nope, still having the problem. Spent an hour on the phone with the Vonage guys and they had me change a bunch of settings and I still have the problem.

So, I went back to the old Arris modem and everything is fine.

I am wondering, should I return the router and get another, or a different one?

Horses?

I changed to a newer dual core router recently since I saw issues with internet speed with the new dual band radios (2.4, 5GHz.) That helped here. Since the old modem works, why change?
