New AT&T wireless service

Apr 4, 2005 12:09AM PDT

I've been hearing rumors that AT&T is starting up a new wireless division sometime this spring/summer. I've heard that Cingular could only use AT&T's name & logo in their advertising for 6 months after the merger for that reason. The rumor is that AT&T will be leasing their network through Sprint (although they will offer different equipment) and that it will be a CDMA service. Has anyone heard anything more about this?

Yes, I believe you are right. What I heard is that AT&T (landline provider) will be reselling a prepaid service, not to be confused with AT&T wireless, but not actually provide the network that it will work on.

I hadn't heard that it was going to be only a pre-paid service. What I've been hearing is AT&T is itching to get back into the wireless business and will do so about six months after the sale of it's former wireless business to Cingular. After six months, Cingular can no longer use AT&T's name and Logo. The rumor is they will be targeting former AT&T Wireless customers such as myself. What I hear is that even though they will lease the network through Sprint PCS, they will offer different equipment and the business will be completely separate from Sprint.
