Networking woes

Mar 8, 2005 7:23AM PST

We have a network set up in the office that has a server set up to allow office internet access and to share a few files amongst all of the machines in the office.

We have a new person with a laptop and we have him hooked up to the network. We have an internet connection so we know that the server works for that, but when we try to set up the share files on the server for the laptop, it only displays one other machine in the office. None of the other machines (7 in all) show up and the server doesn't show up.
It has to be something to do with the firewall or something like that.
The laptop is running WinXP Pro and we have a cat5 connection to the server from the laptop.
The connection says that it is good in the network setup area but we can't see anything.

If we need more iformation just say so and I will get it from the office.

Thanks in advance.

The find machine option?

did you try

we tried that and we disabled the firewall and checked all of the IP and subnet mask and we pinged the server. I am not sure what else to try.
One thing we didn't try was ipconfig. But I don't know if that would have helped anyway though.

And the results?

Didn't try

I know this sounds odd, but I didn't try to ping "from" any other machines! I can't believe I didn't try that. Anywho... I pinged the server and got no lost packets but trying to find the server didn't produce any results though. Not sure what the diagnosis would be.

Thank you for the help.

Certainly sounds like a firewall is in place.

Many will install a firewall or privacy filter before getting their network working.

The other usuals. The workgroup name is not the same...
